Some interesting answers. And a full map features sometime in the future. No more GPS?

I'd just like the TFT to be able to remember it's been paired to devices, I'd be more than happy if it did that and didn't have more enhanced features lol

The issue is mentioned in the video, Android seems to have a problem. With the iPhone takes about 10/20 seconds to pair. Will be interesting to see the pairing improved with the launch of the new iOS.

I will confess I haven't watched the entire video. My TFT regularly forgets its pairings, whether it's paired to an iPhone, Android, headset etc. No amount of turning off/on or waiting fixes it. Even BMW UK say they cannot fix the problem and my bike has to be replaced. So I sure hope they manage to improve this!

I have also tried the latest iOS 14 Beta 7 and it's no better/worse unfortunately. Although it's still Beta it's almost release ready.

 did you ask to change the TFT? Sounds extreme to change the bike just for that. Unless the dash is linked to the ECU?

Yeah, I was told they haven't identified the cause as being either hardware or software but that changing the TFT will definitely NOT fix it. Interestingly I watched the video in full last night and someone asks the question about TFT pairings being "forgotten" and they basically said it's a known problem and they are working to identify the cause, but given that they don't know, one would assume changing my bike would be pointless as the new bike will likely have the same issue.

I can’t believe they still don’t know what causes it.
Every month or so my bike forgets a pairing. It’s the bike that forgets not the phone. Perhaps it’s a hardware fault and they want all the affected units to warranty out due to age before the fix so they don’t have to replace thousands of units.

Bluetooth pairing has been around for years. I’ve had devices match up with each other that haven’t been used together in over a year with no interaction required by me.

The full map feature on the TFT would be interesting. If it’s driven by your phone sending the maps it will eat battery so your phone would need to be powered from the bike (maybe the next gen bikes will have build in phone cubby with power)

If the maps are on the TFT that will increase cost and then open up the question of how updates occur - maybe automatically like TESLA.

I couldn't agree more! I mean the bluetooth is a very small piece of what is otherwise a fantastic machine and some would argue to just ride the damn thing and forget about the tech gizmos. I do see their point, but I work in tech, always have done and like you have got things that haven't been connected in god knows how long and still remember their pairings.

I powered up an old Google Nexus 7 tablet the other day and it immediately paired to my crappy little 8quid Amazon bluetooth dongle in my old desktop PC. The tablet has been switched off and dead of power for 4 years and still remember that it was paired.

I wonder if this will work with my flip-phone...:D
I prefer navigation build in the screen and paying like buying a factory Nav unit for it...

Didn't one of the BMW 'boffins' say that BMW uses their own tweaked version of bluetooth to talk to its own equipment, such as the helmet - might that be what causes some of the connectivity issues?

That could well be the issue. Bluetooth has sets of standardised protocols - step outside that and risk compatibility issues.
A bmw car I owned only paired with some phones as once again BMW had decided to bake their own flavour of Bluetooth.

I would understand if some phones just didn’t work due to the bespoke Bluetooth. But forgetting connections randomly on what seems like any phone type is just weird.

Thing is the TFT was an OPTION on my bike as it was a 2018 bike so I payed more to get it and it’s functions over having the standard clocks.
It was not something that was on the bike anyway and I didn’t care about

It’s not the end of the world but it’s a bit crap that it’s still broken two years later and all they say is we are investigating

I have very few problems with mine, it doesnt connect every single time but i havent had it forget any pairings yet

The BMW specific bluetooth could well be a possibility, they did say in the video that they used their own code to make the volume up/down work with the BMW only headsets.

I am at a loss as to what to try, the battery is fine, I've ruled out all external factors that I can, BMW themselves have looked at my bike and can also see the problem. I've personally tried multiple phones (both iOS and Android) plus multiple headsets borrowed from people and the dash will reconnect to them fine for days maybe even weeks, or as is more often the case after a day or 2, the dash acts like it has no paired devices yet all other settings and customisations I've set within the dash have been remembered.

It's not even a case of when the bike is left standing as I'm riding it pretty consistently at the moment and last week it worked fine 5 days on the bounce, then on the 6th day with the bike having been parked for approx 13 hours I turned it on and it had forgotten everything. Paired it again then it worked for another 2 day......repeat to fade....
