Hi

This is my first post so apologies if this is a numpty question.....

I've just taken the plunge and bought a nearly new R1200 GS (collect in 2 wks time) and have the nav adjuster wheel on LH grip and mounting cradle fitted (TE spec)

Where is the best place to buy the Nav V unit ? Is it only from BMW dealers and are any offering discounts ?

Also, I've seen some images of the nav V unit fitted into a holder with the 4 hard buttons along the LH edge - does this holder fit to the the brkt I have on the bike or just the nav unit on it's own ?

Cheers

Your dealer will sell you one, whether you get a discount is up to your haggling skills.

Whether anyone is selling the device outside of the dealer network, I don't know. A hunt on Google will turn the answer to that up, though they have been appearing on UKGSer FS&W section (I bought one there) and maybe on EBay, too.

The cradle with its four buttons will mount and stay on your bike; the Nav V will then clip into it, quite safely. Exactly how, or whether you might need to buy a little bit of extra bracketry I don't know as I am not familiar with your bike. That being said, the mount is all but identical to the NAV IV and near enough the same as a Garmin 660's (simpler) cradles. If you can find some pictures of those, you'll know what to do. I am certain that it will be easy to fit and power, no matter what.

If it's a reasonably new bike, it will fit for sure.

Don't bother buying a 'security' mount from someone like Touratech. People worry that their bike and trousers are permanently at risk. They are not. Just take a bit of sensible care and you'll be fine, I promise.

Wapping is talking bollocks as usual.

The Nav holder on the new GS TE does not have the 4 buttons, that was the old mount for the Nav 4 on the old 1200 GS's. The left handlebar "wheely thingy"
replaces the 4 buttons.
Nav 5 fits straight into cradle and locks in place using the ignition key. The wheely thingy lets you scroll through screens and display lots of useless data.

I find the wheel a right PIA so only ever use the touch screen.

The fellow specifically asked about the cradle with the four buttons.

OK, Sprout, let's expand. The Nav V has two alternative holders:

1. With four buttons down the side for some bikes. I have one.

2. Without four buttons for some other bikes, most particularly those with the iWheel, or whatever it's called.

The same device will work in both, though some of the functions may not be available all the time. The Nav V will also mount into the Nav IV's holder (with its four buttons on my 800, or without in the case of my 1600) again with the loss of some functions.

As I said, I was unfamiliar with your particular steed. iandavid has filled in the gaps, which is great.

I find the wheel (at least on the 1600) quite intuitive and handy.

Now... Get iandavid to tell you where you can get one cheap.

In Germany, some BMW Motorrad dealers are offering discounts in their online stores. Sorry, I have no knowledge of the UK dealers, but if you can get a discount in Germany perhaps you can find the same in the UK

Not sure if BMW dealers are still doing their 2 year interest free deal on accessories. Approx £25 a month, worth considering ?

I bought one when i got the bike, but if i was to do it all again i would just buy a standard 660. I do not really use the wheel a bit distracting (nearly rode of top of a mountian ). You usaully get the car mount with a standard one and save you self £100 plus

If you are not fussed about the four-button cradle, the main unit will fit the standard Zumo 660 and Nav IV mount which means it will also fit into the Touratech locking mounts. Touratech hasn't come up with one yet that will also take the four-button mount.

I've had the Touratech locking cradle for my Navigator IV, with four button cradle, for a few years .... The Nav V fits straight in to it :thumb

:beerjug:

Edit ... that is the Nav V with its cradle goes straight into the Touratech locking mount. I'm told that the Nav 5 will go in to the Nav IV cradle but it was very tight and wouldn't lock in, I didn't want to force it as there was no need :nenau

The Nav V will fit into a Nav IV cradle. Just need to be a bit firmer, due to the slightly curved back.
