Any Ideas please?

The computer can see it as a disc drive -eventually- but Mapsource cannot see it and says "set unit interface to Garmin or Host"!!

So I can't squirt my maps onto it and I'm going on a 10 day trip on Sunday..

Ta

Dave

no, I'm not ready for BaseCamp or that OpenMapSource .....yet... thanks Tony

Do you mean your maps or your routes/tracks? If the latter just copy them to the gpx folder on the device using your file explorer or whatever Windows calls it. If the former, try Garmin map manager.

No, I managed to update the maps to 2015.4 -over 2 days, the problem is sending my routes to the unit. Neither Mapsouce, Basecamp or MyComputer can see the unit.
Occasionally file manager opens to show it, occasionally MyGarmin will see it, but it will neither send or receive routes,

I have a Quest for sale - comes with certain routes pre-installed .....

You're stalking me!!!
Vines of Guildford have kindly showed me how to change the settings on the thing to make it talk to Mapsource. TFFT
Now I'll be able to see where we should be going.

Could you share that information pleasy please?

My Nav 5 was working perfectly, one night in France it spent the night in my Peli top case, amidst horrendous thunder and lightning .... the next morning it wouldn't work!

Numerous attempts at resets, battery out, full resets, and eventually it fires up. Lost all my data, but no probs. connect to computer (iMac) not recognised, zilch, zero, doesn't show

Disconnected all other USB stuff, still a no go!!!

Mapsource or Garmin Express can't find my Nav 5

:beerjug:

Still love the likkle Quest though :D

Turn the beastie on, press the volume button, press and hold the top right hand corner of the volume screen. You get a whole list of things, scroll down to to MTP settings, press Mass Storage Mode. Job done, the Nav V or any other newer Garmin will now work with Mapsource.

Will try that in the cool light of day Oh Grey One :thumb

Thank you .... now don't go away :D

Well I tried that ... :nenau

My problem is the Mac not recognising the Nav 5 ... nothing, zero, zilch. The Nav 5 just cycles t'ween switching on and off, nothing on the computer :nenau

But thanks anyway :thumby:

could you not get a usb card reader for your computer, plan your route's using base camp or mapsource, then get your sd card put it into the card reader and send the routes to it, put the sd card into your nav 5 and it should work, i think if you have no maps on the sd card you will need to create a folder on the card called garmin and in that folder create another folder called gpx and put your routes in the gpx folder, create the folders first using the card reader. if you already have maps on an sd card you should have the garmin folder already, but maybe not the gpx folder. i dont have a nav 5 or a mac, but this is how it would work with a pc and a 660. hope this helps.

Thanks Leedude ... I don't particularly want to do routes on the Nav5.

It worked fine, was in my top box out in a severe thunder storm while down in France, surrounded by really severe thunder and lightning ... the next morning it wouldn't work. Switch on and after a few seconds would switch off of its own accord.

Tried the resets, battery out etc, no joy. Took it back to the dealer who after much fiddling got it to come on and stay on ... had lost all my waypoints etc. was totally cleared.

My computer won't recognise the unit ... when plugged in to the computer it just comes on .... and switches off again :blast

Back to the dealer for warranty I think ... but thanks anyway :thumb

Micky, if your apparently fried Nav V is still under warranty (or even if it isn't) return it to BMW and ask them for a replacement.

Failing that, call up Garmin and explain the problem to them. Chances are you'll have a replacement sitting in your lap within a very short period of time.

There was a software update a while ago which speeded up the time taken for Macs to sometimes see Nav V devices. When you carried out the full re-set it's quite possible that the update was lost, which might explain why your Mac is having trouble finding the device. There again, maybe not. Maybe it's just a bad USB socket on your device, the timing of which was just coincidental with the storm? Alternatively, maybe the device just picked the moment of the storm to die, the USB socket still being fine and the lightning a real red herring? Whatever it is, BMW and / or Garmin are the route to your salvation, probably.

PS Crossed posts.

Connect to dealers computer to ascertain wether it's the device or Mac. Your using the Garmin supplied USB lead I take it.

I have never had problem with USB leads I have 3 garmin supplied ones that came with new devices little short things. I use normal USB leads, they work on literally hundreds of different Garmins ( and Tom Toms) If I have had any device that won't connect swapping to the Gamin lead has never helped.

This may sound like a daft question, but how long are you waiting before you decide it isn't connecting to the PC? The reason is that my wife and I both have Nav Vs and recently I've noticed it takes between 1 and 2 mins from plugging in to the PC recognising them. This occurs on all PCs and with all cables that I've tried.

I have also had experiences with certain USB leads causing the Nav V to power on when connecting to the PC and then going off again (or booting into the normal screen as though not connected to a PC). Different USB lead solved this issue.

Nav Vs all seem to take time to be recognised by Basecamp, Mapsource is quicker. Other Garmins all appear quicker, they also calculate the downloaded routes quicker. Why this should be I don't know, it happens irrespective of the map-that is it can take just as long when the route has been calculated on the same version of the map.

John

Left it connected for several hours, won't connect to the dealers Mac or PC either.

I'm aware, when it comes to USB cables/devices that if you have any USB 1 devices connected then the computer won't see a USB 2 device, or will keep 'ejecting' it!!

The advantage of buying BMW with two year guarantee ... unit being replace :thumby:

The Nav V is a 3.0 usb device so ideally uses a 10 wire 3.0 usb lead. A 2.0 usb cable has only 4 wires so will be hit & miss at times if used.
