I'm booked on the level 1 course in June. Any tips from anybody that's done it before like what to wear or what to look out for or anything else for that matter?

I'm doing it on a 1200GS. Would've loved to do it on a 1150GSA but they haven't got any!

Wear moto x boots, standing up all day on the pegs with normal boots would be hard on the arch of the foot.
See if you can get in Gary's group (if he's instructing), top bloke!

Excellent write up Tobers! Wow, I know they said bring waterproof gear but I didn't realise how waterproof it would need to be! O well, will just have to get ready to be drenched.

You'll get extremely hot, so wear a vented suit if possible. Getting wet would be a plus point, so don't worry about waterproofs!

Most important is ankle protection. When you get there the instructors say they ideally would like to see people in motocross style boots, but the joining instructions merely say no wellies or trainers.

You might be able to borrow one of the instructors' 1150GSA for a short while if that's what you normally ride, but believe me, you'll be glad of the lighter weight of the 1200 during the day.

I took a great week off earlier this month and took all my treats at once: a trip through the Peak District, a track day at Oulton Park, down the best roads ever to north Wales, and finishing with the two day off-road course. :D

The track day was great - a good contrast to the short Kent circuit I've done a couple of times - even if the crotch rockets scorched me with shocking ease on the straights. But, I love what it does for for my riding the next day.... so easy, so smooth, so tidy (we're talking relative values, here though! )

But, the 2 day course was the biggest surprise. The bruises are still grandpa-stlye in many places, but help remind me what we got up to. I've done a bit off-roading, but nothing like this. At least some of the photos above start to convey the sheer scale of the hills, drops, cambers, ruts, rocks and rips. Seriously hard work, exhausting physically... and mentally.

I am delighted the instructors had such a balls-out attitude (who the hell insures them??!), and that helped create a give-it-a-go-and-have-faith approach to each challenge. Tony gets my vote for an excellent instructor. And boy was instruction needed.

Of course I've now blown all my savings, so it'll be a while before I get to think about doing it again - but it's gonna happen!

Conclusion - great value, great time.
