BMW ownership does it make you worry ?

I love my 08 1200 GS, I fcuking hate BMW for the shite quality of finish on the bike. I have had loads of "issues" with my local dealership and got most of them sorted.
I have to wear a full face helmet because of the stupid grin my bike puts on my face.

I love my GSA too, it really is a bike that will go shopping two up in Piccadilly, green laning on the way home two up (.. done it.. :D) tour wherever you want, trail ride across the Pyrenees, track day, you name it, it will do it. As a motorcycle, and as a motorcyclist, it gives me everything I want. (Apart from proper grunt / speed but hey ho ...grown out of that now... ). It is a brilliant bike.

But! (big but), I'm not going to sit here and slag off the blokes that complain about reliability, 'cos they're right.

In the twenty odd years of Jap bikes ive owned, I've had nothing, nothing go wrong. VFR's, Pan's, ZX's, courier bikes ... they've all been utterly reliable.

My 2010 GSA, (which i love to bits), with only twelve and a half thousand miles, has had a new front shock, new clutch, new fuel gauge (and the second one's fucked but I can't be arsed to take it in..) and the starter button is intermittent and it normally takes about three or four prods to start.

(Don't even get me going about the works RT's and the problems they've had....)

So you BM die hards .... stop kiddin' yerselves that the sun shines out of a Boxers arse!! much as I love this GSA, and as much as I'll probably keep it for years and years, and as much as I can't think of a different bike I'd rather have ... it can't hold a candle to Jap reliability. :comfort

Not owned my one long enough to say all that, but I would say that all my Jap bikes were without fault and I hear a lot of very expensive issues with some of the GS's on here... still love the bike:D though

The more owners I meet......

I worry that I will grow up to be like them. Now does anybody know where my local motor home dealer is :D:D

its all about being prepared , the ultimate accessory is to always make sure you pack one of these old but useful hondas:D:D:D

That can't be one of those ultra reliable 1150's I've heard so much about?:augie

I have just changed my GS for an Explorer, however I did this not because I was worried about the GS, more because I fancied a change having had a succession of BMWs since I passed my bike test and never having owned anything else.

My '08 Height Reduced (factory option) R1200GS though had the following statistics:
- Mileage: 45,000 (less than 100 on forest, non-tarmac trails though)
- Oil used outside of the normal servicing: approx 2 litres
- FPC failures: 0
- Ring Antenna Failures: 0
- Shaft Drive problems: 0
- Front pads changed: twice
- Rear pads changed: once
- Front discs changed: once (after 43,000)
- Rear disc changed: never
- Parts fixed under warranty: Lambda probe on one side
- Average mpg: 50.2 (UK/Imperial)
- Furthest on one tank: 225 miles

Oh and one deer impact where the bike stayed on it's rubber and got me home, it did need a lot of caressing by a dealer against the signature of a nice insurance man.

As such may come back to a GS again in the future, just playing with a different toy for a while.

Why worry FFS. If it breaks (or doesn't brake), fix the bugger. I'm sure in a years time the critics will conclude its still the best adventure bike out there, once the hype of the Trumpet, Cross Dresser and all the other heavy weights have died down.

Ride it and enjoy it. If you're the type to worry about what people write in forums, by all means sell it because of what you read on the internet...............

If you don't get it, sell it, but please go quietly :)
