I remember seing a thread about the BMW panniers side locking mechanism. (Missing rivet). Can someone recall where about is it ? Iam in contact with the local dealer for replacing my left hand side pannier due to that problem.

Any help will be mostly appreciated.

Thks

I think you might find "they're all like that sir". Certainly both of the left hand panniers I've had have had only three rivets in the front clip.

It turned out to be as elusive as the golden rivet installed in all Royal Naval vessels. Clearly the BMW served in the Kriegsmarine.

mine's only got three rivets in too. and I dont see how a fourth could be fitted given the location of the screw. but does it matter anyway? has the clip come off?

Having looked carefully with various rivet guns to hand I believe four is possible. And I have seen four done OEM.

The issue really is that with three it moves a lot and with four not.

Fatigue failure is caused by movement and the question is only when not if. So less than two years they pay etc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does that seem to answer your question.

Where?

..................well, y'know: Maybe not worthless, but for the benefit of of us "Paddingtons"....?

Thank you for all the replies. Left pannier has been returned to the dealer for repairing or replacing.

Up untill now I have received nothing else than excellent service from them . A replacement brand new R1200GS after the first one presented all the now well known problems of the 1st production bikes. Also a replacement set of luggage after the first set flew of the bike during a trip abroad.

Lets see what they will come up with this time.

After lots of careful examination and reading of the instructions for installation I suspect that some dealers did not do the same and so we had problems with loose kit.

When I did it right, after some hassle with badly fitted panniers etc, it all worked fine.

I do not do the sub-orbital stuff but it looks very solid when done right.

When I want to fly I will aquire a bike that comes in well below 225kg wet!!! Then I will ask for a age reduction of 20+ years to go withit!
