BMW power socket to cigarette lighter adapter

SPC do one. Worth ringing to negotiate postage costs - standard website charge is quite large.

TerryM, I'd very much appreciate a link, or part number to what it is that you've bought. I'm also on the look out for cigarrette lighter plugs that work on the Beemer. So far the socket is just a "nice" thing to show your friends... :rolleyes:

When I got the bike I already had a heated jacket but the plug would not fit the BMW socket so I also bought a BMW plug at about 7/8 quid. The idea of more at 30 quid for each socket and cable and 7/8 for each plug did not appeal.

I knew that Hein Gericke sold a BMW clone made by Hella so I bought two sockets(part no.24000928) at 3.99 each and plugs(part no.2400929) at 2.99 each.

I have one socket on each side set into the flat horizontal surface of the tank side panels. If you feel around underneath there is a raised circle moulded into the underside to indicate the correct position.

The cente of the 20mm hole for the socket is about 58mm to the rear of the panel joint and 20mm out from the inner edge. I cut the holes with a 5mm pilot drill and then 10mm followed by a Dremel with a tapered stone of about 14/15mm maximum diameter. It is easy to do and takes less than 5 minutes per side, just keep the Dremel stone in side the hole at all times and go gently round and round until the socket just drops in.

The extra wiring is just two single cores spliced and soldered into the wiring to the BMW original under the seat, you can get at the wires just before they go into the plug at the back of the socket which I ran under the panels to one plug and then across the front to the second. I stripped back the insulationd and tinned with solder to make it less likely to break over time and used tie wraps to hold the wiring at any change of direction or whatever.

That sorted supply of 12volts for the GPS but I wanted to have a lighter type socket to plug in one of those variable voltage stepdown jobbies to run the radio etc. So after my posting responses I went to Maplin and bought a 99p lighter socket. With a piece of cable about 60 cms I have anything from 3 to 12 volts in the tank bag. I used 3 core cable as it is round in section, and so easier to waterproof, and a extended grommet(grommet with tube attached also from Maplin)at the HG plug to seal against moisture. I do not have the Maplin part number, but they also do a marine standard one with a mounting flange which could be set into a panel/box/tankbag etc for about 8 quid. And this could of course be connected directly into the wiring for the BMW plug or wired to the battery, with a suitable fuse in the + feed.

I decided on going into the BMW plug wiring as then the circuit safety system covers my accessories. But of course they only have power for a short time after the ignition is turned off, which with the Garmin 276C and my radio both having onboard batteries is ok.

I've done a 'trial pack' for our Moroccan adventure and I'm horrified at the amount of space taken by electrical stuff--mobile phone charger, PMR Talkabout charger, iPod charger, AA battery charger, video camera charger...

If you get a 12vdc lighter adapter/stepdown unit with variable voltage output from 3v to 9v in 1.5v steps and a selection of plugs sizes (to suit different appliances) which just slot onto the output cable you can leave a lot at home and charge up on the move from the bike circuit. I got mine long ago before the flood at Tandy-Radio Shack and the catalogue number was 270-1560. It would be best to have two or more plugs on the bike so one could always be available for charging.

Farnell also sell the BMW style plugs and sockets. The plugs they sell are identical in every way to the ones on BMW heated jackets, their sockets are not quite as good quality as the BMW ones. But the prices are better, about £1.50 for a plug and £3.00 for a socket as I remember.

Only snag is that they have a minimum order of £10, but I shared an order with another GSer when I got some.
