Hi guys,

I have found the leak to my drive train. I cannot for the life of me remove the outer ring tried heating it but it is too stuck.

Is it possible to replace the inner seal without the removing of the outer ring? I have removed the 36mm nut now, the picture does not show since I made it before. Any tips more than welcome.

I also cannot get the spline removed from the bike. On all video’s it just pops off but this is completely stuck.

No It needs disassembled @casparv

BUT are you absolutely SURE? They always look oily! The usual suspect is the gearbox output seal and the leak runs down to there !

The Driveshaft is a known "thing" BMW tried a coating on the splines it was supposed to make it slide in and out easier

What they did not take account of was its reaction to oil and also when it rusted below the coating it Jacks out and jams the sliding section

If I recall as it has been a few years You need to dismount the swingarm and remove the shaft and try to split it

OR simpler just get a good used one

Good Luck !

oh and P.S. Use 85W140 GL5 in your FD that will slow down any SMALL leaks If there actually is a leak!

Thanks meant that indeed. Will be brining my drive train it to the garage than, don’t have the right setup to open it up.

@casparv

Be absolutely SURE that it is the culprit, before you ask someone to fix it !

As I said above You may "THINK" it is leaking but it may well not be leaking!! And you will have spent money for nothing

For example Make a temporary bench set up and rinse the main drive casing out with paraffin or diesel

Clean the input area really well with Brake cleaner and dry it out Put 200 ml of ATF in the main casing and hang it with the input shaft at the lowest and put a dish below it just in case it does leak

So if you came back the next day or 5 days later and there is no ATF in the dish ?? Then it is not that seal

If you want to try in a more real life set up instead of ATF use EP80 EP 90 ( Use GL5 Spec and then if there are no leaks you can simply reinstall the FD!) or as I use in all the FDs that I did oil changes 85W140 GL5

You will need to get the driveshaft out of the swingarm and try and split it or at least replace it with a known good part This may require swingarm removal But Do NOT leave the shaft as it is it will cause premature wear on the other splines!

If you need to fit a new final drive input seal also replace the compression ring that pushes onto the input shaft into the seal … it gets worn and can let oil past.
