hi
my 2013 90th anniversary is due for it's first service and would like to ask a very good friend of mine and also a bike mechanic to take care of this not the dealer.

he asked me if i can manage to get a service/maintenance schedule so that he can perform work as recommended by BMW.
I found two of these in pdf format and on one there is 'tighten' cylinder head and the other this is omitted.
also should the oil be changed or not please?
on this schedule it says 10k kms or one year.
the bike is 4 months old and 950kms.

thank you

The latest running in schedule I have doesn't have anything about tightening the head.

Engine oil should be changed
Final drive oil should be changed
Everything else is just checks on fluid levels in the brakes and so on and the throttle body sync should be checked. Fault codes read and service reminder set. Unless your friend has a gs911 he isn't going to be able to do those.

That's it really. Other than changing oils the 1000km service is really just about making sure the bike is still in one piece and nothing is coming loose.

thank you markigsa.
very helpful.
do you think i should be concerned about the fact that i will not be hooking the bike up to the dealer computer and update the software with any updates if there are?

thank you

It's your bike of course and I'm sure your friend is a top mechanic, but if it were me I'd have it serviced at BMW certainly through the warranty. Take your own oil and the first service doesn't cost much (if anything) then you have the 12 and 24 month services - if anything goes wrong then home servicing may not seem such a good idea if the warranty is void and good will isn't offered.

Clearly bikes out of warranty (unless extended) are better candidates for self maintenance.

What old wobbly said is worth noting, dealer goodwill will be essential should you need to make a warranty claim or if anything goes wrong just outside warranty.

I do all my own servicing once outside warranty, but whilst in warranty I wouldn't go anywhere else but BMW.

Find a good BMW dealer whose staff you trust and are competent
Use them
They will spot stuff your mate won't, because they know the bike's inside out
Works for me even with 10 year old bike
