Just picked up my new R1200RT LC at weekend and it came with a large topbox. I had kept my old topbox in case I my new bike did not have one but now I can sell it on. If anyone has a need for it please PM me to discuss further.

Is your old topbox from an oil cooled RT? What colour please?
Thanks

Yes it is but they fit the new LC RT also as well as K1600. Colour is black with silver lid complete with padded backrest for pillion and is largest box capable of accepting 2 helmets.

Yes its the 49lt top box that can hold 2 helmets.

No keys as they went with bike but you can get a kit from BMW that sets lock to work with your own key. Looking for £250 ono

Isn't the form on these that you supply it unlocked and the new owner simply takes it to their local BMW dealer who adjusts the barrel "leaves" to the new owner's ignition key? Am I wrong? And some dealers even do it for free :bounce1

The box needs to have the lid open so you can remove the round cover, but the lock needs to be in the locked position to remove the barrel .
If,the box is just supplied open and unlocked it's a real pain to get the lock barrel out.

If you've got the lid open, but the lock locked, is it ok to close the lid as far as it will go, or will it lock up?

And if you've already got a new barrel and key, can you remove the old barrel using the new key to get it out once you've pressed the hard-to-find button thing with a bent paper clip attached to a screwdriver?

Phew! So many questions :D

What he says, I had to drill the barrel out of mine and refit a new one, not a major issue as I got a good deal on the box off a fellow tosser.

:)

Yes you can use the new key to pull the barrel, out once you have tripped the retainer leaf.

Not sure about your closing lid question, but why would you need to? If it's for shipping, prop the lid slightly, open with a cloth.

Yep, I believe him :P but do you know the answers to my questions, dammit! :D

I have now placed my reading glasses in front of my eyes, instead of on my head, were they usually live (Reading glass denial phase)

As long as the handle does not close in transit, IMHO you will be fine, perhaps a bit of cardboard and gaffa tape to prevent the lid locking handle from depressing and locking and it's all good :)

Cool. I've done this once before, so I'll give it another go, then I can supply the case with the barrel and key out so that the new owner can just get it keyed to his ignition.

Yep, the closing question was about shipping if I didn't get the barrel out. I'd planned to prop it open, but wouldn't have bothered if there was no danger of it locking.

Thanks for your help. Oh, and apologies to the OP for a bit of a thread hijack - at least you've been bumped back up :beerjug:

Am I missing something with these top box prices??

It looks like a used top box for previous model is around the £400 mark complete with scratches/damage. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-K26-R...995267?hash=item4af6035c43:g:OGwAAOSwWnFV~A-L

But a new one is £367.20 plus postage and a key/barrel obviously http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-top-c...150225?hash=item48843bb2d1:g:SBEAAOSw4HVWDDdW

I have a 15' RT LC and certainly won't be paying the price of a new model top box.

You wouldn't be able to buy a new one at that price from a UK shop, it would be more! that German store is able to sell them cheaper than BMW UK does :-(
