BMW Recall

Evening All, I was wondering if any of you had had any recent recalls on your bikes.

I contacted my local BMW dealers yesterday to gain an idea of what would be the top rate price for a new front tyre (supply and fit).

When I spoke to the guy on the phone, he informed me that there was a recall outstanding for my bike ('09 GSA) which needed to be sorted.

When asked about the details, he said that an issue had been identified with the routing of the clutch cable on the left hand side of the bike and that they were in the process of recalling bikes to rectify the situation.

Anyone else been told this?

Oh, the price for the tyre to be replaced (just in case anyone wants to throw money away) was £119 plus VAT as opposed to £73 all in at one of our local bike garages.

I removed a couple of tire wraps myself and made sure there was no dip in the line between the lever and the cylinder. I had previously removed a couple of tie wraps in accommodating the Rox risers I installed.

It may well be an "Service Bulletin" rather than a "Recall". Means that your bike will be sorted at the next visit to the dealer, triggered by their computerised database.

That would suggest it is an "Service Bulletin"

We are all now wondering the same thing.

So, instead of calling Matthew Terry at Cannons to find out why a bike has not been recalled, I will post a question here, in the forlorn hope that he sees it.

OK, failing any answer from Matthew, here are my guesses:

(a) You bike is not subject to any recalls. You just think it is, for whatever reasons.

(b) Your bike is subject to recalls but BuMW or Cannons forgot to tell you.

(c) Your bike is subject to recalls and BuMW or Cannons did tell you, but the letter got lost in the post.

(d) Your bike is subject to recalls and BuMW or Cannons did tell you. The letter did not get lost in the post, but you chucked it in the bin as junk mail.

(e) Your bike is subject to recalls and BuMW or Cannons did tell you. The letter did not get lost in the post, but you could not read it and / or forgot.

With a bit of effort I could possibly think up some other possibilities involving, bubonic plague, mass amnesia, sun spots, giant teddy bears, 50 strippers from Spearmint Rhino, Basildon's mayor and a fishing boat from Canvey.

When you find out from Mr Terry, do please let us know. If Cannons / BuMW have been negligent it's good for others to know. If you have cocked up, at least it will help to salve your conscience to confess.

Of course all this assumes that St Matthew of Cannons would of course know who 'Polecat' from Essex is and / or the registration / VIN numbers of the bike in order to compose a justifiable reply as to why a (possibly) unknown bike had not been recalled.

It's not unknown for patrons of this parish to make this assumption of course.

St Eptoe had the same problem when offering muffs for sale. Bods used to order some, but forget to add their name or address. Poor Neil was then lambasted for not forwarding the muffs to "Egg face' Address: 'Right out there'.

What makes you think your bike is subject to a recall?

Have you tried calling Cannons, or any other dealer or BuMW to find out if it is?

If so, did they not reply or what did they say?

Simply asking why a dealer has not contacted you about an unspecified recall on an 09 bike that may (or may not) be required is not getting you (or us) any closer to suggesting or finding a possible solution.

Polecat,

Maybe your 09 bike is subject to a recall or a campaign or a 'fix' or a 'service bulletin', or whatever they care to call it. But maybe BuMW are perhaps dealing with the problem in a sequential basis? For instance bikes one to 300, then bikes 301 to 600. Then 601 to 900 or whatever.

That might make perfect sense. If your bike is in tranche three then there may well be a delay before your notification is posted out. Similarly, if your bike has been in for some work (say a routine service) it's quite possible that the rectification work was done but you were not informed; it's not unknown.

Another possibility is that some bikes within the batch numbers do not need doing, as they were assembled differently. Again, this is not unusual.

For instance, many 06 bikes were subject to a Fuel Pump Controller fix. Mine wasn't on the batch lists. How do I know? Because I called my friendly BuMW dealer and asked.

This may on the face of it be odd, as my bike had had a FPC failure, which I fixed myself (see thread) which BuMW could not have known about, implying that it should have summoned in by BuMW but wasn't. So, nothing is entirely perfect.

Another possibility is that BuMW are dealing with the issue using their own database, not the DVLA's. This is quite possible and quite above board.

If you bought the bike second hand, whilst the DVLA (I assume) know you are the keeper, BuMW possibly do not. Whether that is the case, or who has the responsibility to keep BuMW's own records up to date, is a matter of possible conjecture.

Now, call Cannons and ask them if your bike is to be brought in and if so, when.

You obviously didn't read the original post, then. The question (paraphrased) was "...has anyone else had this recall..."

Many people here could have answered that question.
