Basically the BM mount gets rid of all of the hard wired ports, so they can sell more Bluetooth helmets.

So you pay twice the price for less function.

I am not sure I understand this thread, but I'll try an answwer (referring to the Garmin Zumo 660, which is basically a BMW Navigator IV without BMW functions): you pair iPhone with GPS, then you pair GPS with any Bluetooth helmet receiver you happen to have. That way, you can receive and give phone calls from the iPhone through the GPS and spoken road directions from the GPS. If you want to listen to music, you have to upload it to the GPS first.

As for earphones plugged directly in the GPS unit, I've never seen that. And I don't see what the BM mount has to do with this.

Is this what this thread is about?

I use high end earphones (Shure E5) and have everything sorted without any cables in the way.

If you want it all working then the way to do it is this:

Get a bluetooth decent connector first, I use a Sony Ericsson MW600, it also gives me a radio that way. It can handle multiple connections as well.

My iPhone connects to the NAV IV and is paired to that.
The MW600 connects to the NAV IV as well.
The MW600 has a second connection to the iPhone just in case I want to listen to music from the iPhone. I have an SD card in the NAV IV with music on it.

Any phone functions, the NAV IV prioritises and plays over the MW600 with my nice Shures, same for music, speed cameras and satnav.

If I want radio, the MW600 gives me that and the NAV IV still interrupts.
I have two music sources this way, the card or the iPhone.

All works and no cables as I use the very short primary cables on the Shures straight into the MW600 and that clips at neck level. Ay phone functions show up on the NAV IV.

I could make calls on the move but in practice it's a bad idea. I enjoy the music but that's as much distraction as I will tolerate. I can see calls/texts etc and will stop and call back. The iPhone has a really easy way to change your voicemail greeting without too much bother so I can switch my greeting to say I'm on the bike, I've seen you've called and I will call back when I can.

I rarely text while riding the bike, even with predictive text it's quite hard typing while riding along. Cruise control helps with freeing up more digits....

Thanks, I might give that a go.

I've had Autocom/Starcom for many years but just got fed up of the complexity.

I bought a Sena SMH10 - works very well, but it sits on the side of the helmet like a carbuncle!

I never use the intercom side of things any more, and rarely use the phone on the go, but its dead handy to make a phone call when you're pulled over without having to take your helmet and gloves etc off.

What cradle do you use for your iPhone?

Cheers
Michael

How many hours usage do you get out of the MW600 before it needs recharging?

I could also do with a way to connect with my passenger too. I need to investigate how to utilise my old Autocom (for rider/pillion conversation) and the Bluetooth connection to the Nav IV

I get about 12 hours out of the MW600 with it being used 100% of the time for music streaming. If not being used for playing music it must be way longer, probably a few days.

I use the Ultimate Addons waterproof cradle, they do two versions for the iPhone, one is a hard case and while that's OK, it means removing any regular case you have on the phone. They also so a waterproof softer case and that is perfect, it fits the phone with the case still on, is waterproof in UK weather (I've tested it in a torrent) and you can still use the screen no problem. It has sealed zips and looks fine on the handlebars. It is a quick release from the bar mount but I usually just unzip the case and phone comes with me as normal.

That looks to be a very elegant solution.
Any ideas how it could be extended to give rider to pillion communication? Or is that a step too far?

You can if you are using an Autocom to cotrol everything. Calls on the move need noise cancelling capability. At motorway speeds on mine it is so quiet most people don't believe I am on the bike.
So, can you summarise your system, as I have an (old) Autocom PRO-7-Sport taken from my previous bike, which was non-Canbus. I am after linking up with the BMW Navi IV, my iPhone, and rider-pillion communication.
Unfortunately, I am sat in Germany, so trying to get advice locally is a little beyond my german language skills!!

There are a few walkie talkie apps like Voxer and Zello which work for this. It would need both ends to have iPhone.

Bluetooth Phone to GPS. Bluetooth GPS to autocom (using their bluetooth dongle Part 1273 which turns the bluetooth into a 3.5 jack). Connect Part 1188 to 7 pin connector and plug ear monitors and microphone headset into it. (the cheaper alternative for the last part is to cut the headphones form your helmet headset and wire a 3.5 stereo jack to it - at your own risk of course... but it worked for me when I used them)

To answer the question you asked there is indeed an audio out socket on the left hand side of the Zumo 660 under the rubber sealing cover so I'm assuming the BMW version may have the same.

Oh Oh, if it's on the left hand side that means it is covered over by the BMW cradle!!!! Maybe I'll have to put a hole in the cradle end face to get my audio cable onto my Zumo 660 or go to bluetooth connection which I have so far avoided.

I bought a Sena SMH10 - works very well, but it sits on the side of the helmet like a carbuncle!

Sena now do an SMH10R which is a slim version of the SMH10 but the uk distributor site says they won't have any for a month or so.
So do I wait or go for the Sony Ericsson MW600? The Sony is a lot cheaper but I would have preferred the unit to be attached to the helmet so there aren't any dangling cables etc to cope with.
I 'm going to use my Garmin 660 but that shouldn't be a problem for bluetooth connection with either the Sena or the Sony.
Has anyone attached a Sony to their helmet, if so how, without affecting the button controls?

Count

i invested the princely sum of Euro 32 and bought myself the MW600. It works really well and I can indeed have FM or music from my iPhoe and the navigation instructions from the nav IV. Thanks for the advice.

What I haven't sussed out yet though, is how I get music from iTunes on my computer into the Nav IV. I know they maust be in MP3 format for the Nav IV/Garmin. Any chance you could jot down an idiots guide as to what to do, particularly any tricks that help the process and experience.

Eventually, I may go down the Sena BT system route, primarily for rider to pillion comms, but I am well pleased with the MW600 set up you recommended
