BMW Sort Brake Squeal

Old V's New pics anyone?

Does anyone have pics of the old "carriers" ? and also the new ones?

I'd be interested to see the difference to see which i have...

I've got an 05 bike, took delivery late March, but have not suffered squealing to any degree as yet... just wondering if i already have the new, or if i'm just dog gone lucky :D

Stu.

Just go the bike back from service and they didn't have the parts in to solve the squeal, so it'll have to go back in at some future date. Apparently the replacement kit is disc carrier, disc and pads.

I'm confused, I didn't think the GS12 had disc carriers - the disc bolts straight to the wheel (well it does on my cast wheels).
Or am I just being padantic ;)

I spoke to my dealer the other day about the brake squeel and mentioned that I had read on this site about BMW rectifying it with new discs (or carriers). He said he was unaware of this and that BMW had told him that if a GS customer complained strongly enough, then they should take out the pads and champfer the edges of the pads which should cure the problem.

Obviously some have tried this to no avail. I'll wait for the time being and see if BMW have come up with a positive fix by my next service.

Went to my dealer the other day and they showed me a BMW bulletin with a supposed fix for this problem which apparently will be available in the next two weeks. don't ask me what it conists of though cos I didn't have the opportunity to read it. Suffice to say they know the problem exists and have a cure!!!???

My bike sometimes squeals when coming to a stand still but not enough to be an issue.

However, something I have noticed, and it seems to have got worse the more miles I put on (now around 3500) is a pulsing sensation with light to moderate braking when scrubbing off speed.

I raised it with Pidcocks today and the 'squeal-fix' kit is also supposed to address the pulsing in the brakes. Although I've not heard mention of it on this site Pidcocks reckon it is quite common problem on the GS12's.

The discs bolt directly to the wheel with no carrier and are meant to be semi floating but in actuality they are not.
The mod will consist of new disc, bolts, washers and rubber inserts in order to make the discs fully floating.

My bike's booked in to have the mod at the end of June (the first kits arrived at Pidcocks this week) so I'm looking forward to seeing what a diference this will make.

Cheers

When I had mine serviced at Pidcocks on 12 May and complained about the brake squeal I was told they did not have a fix and given a load of waffle about asbestos free brakes. Maybe they didn't know about the fix at that time or maybe I need to be more of a whinger. Either way, I've also noticed a slight pulsing on the brakes which I thought felyt like the discs were slightly warped, not enough to be a problem and I accept I am very fussy about my bikes. Just about to leave on a mega tour of the Alps so that should sort it one way or the other!

I think Pidcocks have only just found out about the kit to be fair to them JayGee.

The way you describe the pulsing as being like a warped disc is spot on, infact it was in the Pyrenees last w/e that I really noticed it and thought that I had warped a disc with all the heavy breaking in the mountains.

Have fun in the Alps :)

Not an issue - I'm affraid I have to disagree. When you spend between £9-10k on German Engineering I would not expect to have everyone at junctions looking round as I come to a stand-still and announce my presence rather vividly.

I have temporarily sorted mine by applying copper crest to both sides of each pad - no more squeal for me :thumb

mmm

Wizard - My last line was a bite - grease on both sides of the pads!!! :nono

Awww..... so no pics of you hurtling through red lights with a stunned look on your face? :(

A couple of observations:
The front brakes are floating using belville type washers.
I had mine serviced the other week having never had any sign of squeal. Post service it squealed like a stuck one. Why?????
They had disassembled the brakes and liberally coated the pads (not friction surface for the wags) and pins with HT grease. There has never been any form of grease near my brakes - in fact I am not convinced of its efficacy anyway.
I stripped the lot down and degreased pad, pins and caliper bearing surfaces. In other words reassembled completely dry. Guess what? NO SQUEAL.

There is a modification for this ,apparently its a set of washers which go between mounting bolts and discs,Ihad mine done at end of july and no squeel since,Again thanks to alan at hursts :thumb

tHEY'RE GOOD THESE 1200's ?

I agree, they are superb - a big improvement over the old model.

After complaining about the squealing brakes at my 1000km service, only to be told that the dealer's test ride did not reveal any problem, I went back with a bit of attitude and a printout of the document posted by Activmoto. I think they were a little surprised to have a well informed customer, and after a bit of consultation between the front-office bloke and mechanics, they ordered in the parts, which have been installed today. Problem cured, and I'm a much happier rider - you don't realise how annoying squealing brakes are until they've gone.

A big thank you to Activmoto - without that document I probably would not have got a result. I was so pleased by the outcome I became a UKGSer site sponsor...

Mine has brake squeal ay low speed, i'll get my dealer to look at this while getting the 6k service done, might wait until next year now. hopefully they'll be helpful :mmmm

Brake Squeel

Just had my 6k service done at CW's in Dorchester. I got them to fit the brake mod (coated washers) and I now have no noise from my brakes :D

ps - What great service from CW's - Highly recommended :thumb
