BMW tank bag fitting

THUNDER
Can I ask a favour. Could you tell me the dimmension from centre of left screw to centre or right screw across the rear of the tank. ie as if you followed the contour of the tank with a bit of string.

I have just spoken to THIRD dealer, VINES BMW who also told me that a small bag didn't exist. They said they used to do 2 bags for the GSA 2007 and previous but the bag fouled the steering so they kept the smaller one only and it is £157. I said " There is a brand new one out and dealers have put a picture of it on web and it is £87"
Guess what the reply was. " No they don't"!!!!!!!!!

I wasn't going to tell her that I had already ordered one from another incompetent dealer but wanted a definate answer to if it fitted a GSA 2007 rather than me collect it from miles away ( taking car, not bike! )

I looked at the Amerian bloke on Advenure Rider link and he has scratched the tank sides fitting it and it touches the tank base in places, won't be long before that scratches tank.

I can't believe that it is not designed to fit the GS and GSA or at the very least offer an optional extra to buy the zip securing point for a GSA.

I was trying to avoid driving miles to pick it up and then have to take it back. Other option is to get a metal fabricator to make a bracket for GSA and leather bloke to refit and stitch the rear fixing bit back on. Seems alot of effort

If it's the bag shown on Adv Rider site you want I have seen one in South London Motorcycles.

As an aside it unfortunately not possible to trust what all dealers say. I came back to my bike today to find a guy looking at it who asked what modifications I had to make to fit a GSA screen on my GS. He had been told by his dealer that it was not possible. Anyone who has done it would know that it takes about five minutes to unscrew the GS screen and screw on the GSA one.

Oh fer fecks sake!

Communication within the BMW dealer network seems patchy to say the least.:spitfire

OK lets see if this helps:

Part numbers

Large Bag 7160 7713 015
Small Bag 7160 7713 013

Fitting kit (strap and bracket) 7160 7713 016

The distance between the holes on the bracket as far as I can tell is 19.5 cms.

I liked them so much I got both (talk about woman and shoes :augie) so measured the spare bracket.

One thing worth pointing out in the manual (typical BMW A$ manual for a bag) its clearly marked for the 1200 GS not GSA, but I think we all know that by now.

Thanks both of you. THUNDER you are star.

I will see 2moro what the BMW incompetents say.

Bought the little 5 litre BMW tank bag today. The part number is 71607713012 and it comes with metal bottom bracket fitting, part number 71607713016.

It will NOT FIT a PRE 2008 GS Adventure with standard bars and cross brace fitted. I doubt it will fit with bar risers either but I can't say for sure. The cross brace hits the bag and stops the steering doing full lock or anywhere near it. I have also tried with the foam pad removed and still no good.

The bag fits the shape of the tank on new and pre 2008 Adventure and as we have already seen the metal bracket doesn't fit an ADVENTURE of any year and will need adapting if you insist on fitting. The old shape clip under rear edge of tank style fitting would still fit but unless you live and ride on a perfectly straight road the bag will be no good for you.

It will NOT foul the steering on the 2008 GS ADVENTURE as it doesn't have a cross bar. You will, as mentioned, have to adapt the rear bracket as it is too wide for the fixing srew position.

Thankfully a mate with a normal GS had it off me for what I paid so haven't got a long journey to take it back.

Shame coz the bag looks nice and ideal for little things but not much else.

That is why BMW don't list it for an Adventure, ha ha, at least we now know!!

I am 99% it will yes. Looking at your link you did with American site, was it Adventure Rider? the bracket will 100% need adapting and better than he did. Maybe even get one fabricated.

It was only the cross bar that fouled on my bike so if that wasn't there I would say the 2008 bars would be ok as the bar is not fitted to them.

My mate fitted the small bag ( 5 litre ) with the metal rear bracket, to his 2007 R1200 GS and he said all he had to do was slightly bend the bracket to make it fit.

So we now know they will fit PRE 2008 GS as well as 2008 model

tank bag fitting

does anyone know if a tank bag for an 06 gs will fit when the bmw nav3 is mounted to the handle bars :bow

the bmw kit mounts the sat nav on to the 4 bolts that hold the handle bars in place, which means sat nav is right in middle of bars at front ot tank.

That's why I didn't use the BMW kit. Use a RAM mount on the bars instead

Just found this post over on Adv Rider concerning modifications required on the metal bracket for the new tank bags to fit one to an 08 GSA.

As the 08 GSA uses the same tank and side panels as the previous versions it looks like the new bags have been designed specifically for the 2008 GS so if your intending to fit one to another model you will have to make some alterations to the bracket.

Quite right Rog, bought the smaller 08 tank bag and found that the bracket didn't fit my 08 GSA.

After looking at the Adv Rider post and thinking a bit I decided to try gently bending the bracket by hand.

I bent it in the shape in the photo below and it fits perfectly both with the seat and the new tank bag.

I found working in small increments at a time and checking the position of the mounting holes worked well.

know is a bit old but the bag will fit but you wont see much as the bag blocks out that area of view...

also worth noting for the larger older model bag- the switch geaar touches the bag on full lock and after time wears away the GS symbols...

yes i have a small garage so have found that out after a 50 point turn....... :augie

Now comes in 2 versions a day to day bag with about 5 liters capacity and a "touring" version expandable up to 17 liters pricing is about £84 and £165 approximately.

The smaller one looks to be exactly what I need, but seems not to exist in the online catalogue any more. Does anyone know if they still exist?

I found an nex OEM BMW small tankbag for GS 2008 on Ebay; price seems very good and free shipping

check item n° 150329433513

I have one on my 2008 GSA, what Bill at Ocean did was order me the old style zippy bit and used that instead of the metal bracket it fits perfectly

seems like the best solution so far - no bending - cutting or modifying :)
