Another Top Box failure
Today I discovered the top box on my 01/06 model GS1200 had a crack on the base, in exactly the same place as others shown in this thread. I checked the manufacture date on the top box - it is September '05. Clearly BMW have not upgraded or reinforced the top boxes, at least up until this date.
I took the bike to the BMW dealership who claimed that they have not heard of such a fault (bollocks!). I pointed out that there are many well documented incidents on GS forums, and the manufacturer would be well aware of this problem. After much head scratching, the local dealer agreed to order me a nerw top box under warranty. When I arrived home I saw on the US Adventure Rider forum that BMW are selling an 'Enduro Kit' for the GS1200 - essentially two bolts and a couple of rubber spacers to properly secure the box. Certainly not as convenient as the existing snap on, snap off system - but probably well worth it to avoid watching your top box and camera gear go bouncing down the expressway.
I called the local dealer and mentioned the Enduro kit - they confirm they have them in stock for $24.....but I would have to buy one. Now.....I would have thought it would have been in their best interests to supply one to me, otherwise I will most likely be back with yet another broken top box???
Has anyone heard of this kit, or been supplied with one from a dealer? The part number is 71-607697847.
I tried to attach a piccie of the damaged top box but I can't seem to upload???
