BMW top box failure pic.

You don't seem to get any problems if you attach the topbox to the pillion seat. You can take speed bumps at motorway speeds without problem.

more of the same.....my top box cracked in the same place and was replaced a few months ago.

Replacement has cracked even more severely and the box did a little dambuster down the road all on its own last week. I had just gone over a speed bump in central london (admittedly a bit out of the range of recommended speed thresholds for said bumps).

Phoned Sawbridgeworth BMW dealer who were very helpful...but said all they would do was replace it with an identical one.

Would have thought BMW would have realised by now that its only a matter of time before one of these "box down the road" failures causes a pile up and they're going to get sued.

I pointed this out to Park Lane and have been given a full refund for the vari-no-box system as it is clearly unfit for the purpose for which it is intended and in fact sold to you.

Mine flew off outside a hospital.

Sawbridgeworth BMW should be able to give you a refund. In fact, sounds like an excuse to me.

get my new bike tomorrow too.

Lisjon,
what was the manufacture date stamp in your top box? I believe from the 7/05 onwards was the new model.
Now they are recommending you use the retrofit bolts with it when going off road.
My 2nd pre. 7/05 box cracked and I didnt leave the tarmac.

Gonz.

BMW New Zealand say bolt the box on until BMW Germany come up with a fix.

Sorry. My brother has launched two from the pillion seat mount after hitting decent potholes at speed.

....its ok, you don't have to apologise :dabone

I've done about 15k over very dubious roads, at lease 30 jumps over speedbumps every day, no problem. Always secure.

....thereby giving all your local scallies something else to break into with a screwdriver!

Marcus says take it back for a refund and get something else that only becomes removed from the bike when you want it to.

I lost top boxes from both the back seat and the rack, although the back seat is more stable.
Mounting on the luggage rack can lead to your bike having more rattles than Mothercare.
Locks prone to vanishing en-route
Handles snap easily.

er, "product liability".

Won't be too long before something nasty happens

Crap, expensive bit of kit. That's all there is to it, really. :)

date stamp

Gonz - date stamp is July 05 on both lid and inside box so in theory new model.

As there doesn't appear to be any move to fix the fault I'm going to get a refund and go for something else.

I would too, but I hate the look of the after market top box's on the 1200gs, so I'm getting BMW to screw the box on and replace it when they finally get a new updated box free.

I would hate the box to come off and kill some one knowing that it was my fault as I new the box could come off. I think you could get sued as well.

I'm getting all confused over this top box issue

Have any of you guys that have had top boxes crack and/or fall off had this happen to the 'new modified' case (ie the one with the moulded in strengthening ridge) or are all the problems reported here happening to people who still have the original design of case?

Cheers
Andres

Just checked mine new bike 6 weeks ago has small crack already milage covered 65 !

Base has same part number as previous photo with the little extra bar bit on but mine has no little extra bar bit on

I got rid of my overpriced BMW topbox which I bought brand new for £250 (fitted) at BMV stroud. I now use a Givi E52, £187 off the net including fixing bracket and P&P, much better value for money even though I think it does'nt look quite right on a GS.

:(

Does anyone have a pic of the modified new box, so that I can see what has changed.. or is this a rumour :nenau

If it is not a rumour.. and it has been modified... has it been successful ?
:D

p.s.
Oh--I see that Outtomunch's new box looks like this :

It looks like there may be an 'extra' horizontal piece

If so.. does it work ?
:D

So far (a year later) it's been fine :thumb

It's been all the way to Istanbul, Spain a couple of times and France about four times, not to mention carrying me sarnies to work :)

There is now a small amont of lateral play on the mounting plate but nothing I'm worried about.

Another Top Box failure

Today I discovered the top box on my 01/06 model GS1200 had a crack on the base, in exactly the same place as others shown in this thread. I checked the manufacture date on the top box - it is September '05. Clearly BMW have not upgraded or reinforced the top boxes, at least up until this date.

I took the bike to the BMW dealership who claimed that they have not heard of such a fault (bollocks!). I pointed out that there are many well documented incidents on GS forums, and the manufacturer would be well aware of this problem. After much head scratching, the local dealer agreed to order me a nerw top box under warranty. When I arrived home I saw on the US Adventure Rider forum that BMW are selling an 'Enduro Kit' for the GS1200 - essentially two bolts and a couple of rubber spacers to properly secure the box. Certainly not as convenient as the existing snap on, snap off system - but probably well worth it to avoid watching your top box and camera gear go bouncing down the expressway.

I called the local dealer and mentioned the Enduro kit - they confirm they have them in stock for $24.....but I would have to buy one. Now.....I would have thought it would have been in their best interests to supply one to me, otherwise I will most likely be back with yet another broken top box???

Has anyone heard of this kit, or been supplied with one from a dealer? The part number is 71-607697847.

I tried to attach a piccie of the damaged top box but I can't seem to upload???

Thanks Peter.......it seems this topic has been well and truly discussed. I wonder why BMW don't offer these kits to all who purchase top boxes?

Hi

The top box as had only one trip to Scotland, two days 650 miles & 3 day trips, its a 04 year :spitfire

Will see Mr BMW for a new one. :thumb
