BMW top box failure pic.

Yep this is how mine looks, minus the open crack. You can see the line where it will crack however..............ok ok it might not (but I doubt it).

I fail to see why I should use the box (knowing its no different to my previous one) and run the risk of it being ejected, hitting someone, and damaging the contents......phone, organiser, camera etc.

I don't understand what you guys are on about. I have posted this photo before and it is the updated box. There is no other fix. So if your replacement box does not look like this you have an old box.

Now I'm not sure if this new box will work, but I'm giving it a go carefully. Remember if a Top Box comes off and you new it was faulty who would be at fault. Not BMW but you.

Hey Kiwi Adv.
I guess you saw my posts. Any chance you can send me some more pics of the box AND the part number. I am tired of being lied to (not by me dealer) and want to deal head on with Motorrad.

I cant give you a PM, so could you send to [email protected]

Thanks for the picture dude.

I will compare part numbers (I know it will be different)

Gonz.

PS Was that date stamp 7/05?

I now have one of the modified (new model) topboxes.

I have to award full marks to my dealer (Balderston) who took one look at it and said leave it with us. I did and returned an hour later and collected the new box with my key lock fitted to it.

Kiwi, or Thermadprofessor

any chances of taking a pic of the part number of the bottom part of the top box. IE, the pic Kiwi took was of the lid, I believe the lid and the box have different numbers, and perhaps of the new reinforcement of the latch area.

In addition to my last post.... I have the same part # as Kiwi Adventure, it is the lid which appears to have not been changed. Mine was manuf. in 2/05

The bottom of the box was manuf. in 1/05. My part # is 767907166883301 this is still the faulty design.

Here's two piccies from my 'new' modified top box, one showing the number stamped onto the lid (and manuf. date) and one showing the number stamped onto the base.

Thanks heaps Outtomunch,

gives me something to go on now. Might call BMW Motorrad today. It doesnt really pay to tell 'porky pies'

Many thanks again.

Gonz.

The pic with the part number, is that on the inside of the lid? I also have that part number. I need the part number INSIDE the box itself, not the lid.
thanks in advance.

Thanks dude.

Spoke to head equipment guy from Aus BMW Motorrad, said he'd look at his stocks and get back to me.

Cookson, thanks for that. I've already had a more discreet reply from one of our kind moderators regarding sponsorship. Some things you learn the hard way. Getting back to the topic.
I am in consult with a very helpful chap from BMW Motorrad Australia. The impression I get from him, he doesnt know about the re-vamped box. I gave him some manufacture dates (thanks to those who replied) and he will be speaking to Germany. I suspect a delay due to the festive season. I will reply when more news comes to hand.

top box saga (continued)

more of the same.....my top box cracked in the same place and was replaced a few months ago.

Replacement has cracked even more severely and the box did a little dambuster down the road all on its own last week. I had just gone over a speed bump in central london (admittedly a bit out of the range of recommended speed thresholds for said bumps).

Phoned Sawbridgeworth BMW dealer who were very helpful...but said all they would do was replace it with an identical one.

Would have thought BMW would have realised by now that its only a matter of time before one of these "box down the road" failures causes a pile up and they're going to get sued.

Lisjon,
what was the manufacture date stamp in your top box? I believe from the 7/05 onwards was the new model.
Now they are recommending you use the retrofit bolts with it when going off road.
My 2nd pre. 7/05 box cracked and I didnt leave the tarmac.
