Feel free to move this to the rant section if you must.

I bought a 1200gs, after reading all the negative slander about the topbox and all the issues that go along with it (falling off, cracking etc. etc.) i still opted for it because A. it started to look like Bee Em fixed those problems and B. it is really the only option in RSA 'cause we don't get all the nice toys you guys do. I also ordered a system 5 helmet(no stock and had to ride with a borrowed system 4 which fits in the topbox just fine) i got my system 5 on friday and lo and behold - it doesn't fit in the effing topbox. this after BMW advertises it as 'fits a helmet easily'. When i confronted them, the sales rep shrugged and said "mmf coud've sworn it fits :nenau " - what next, Bee em bringing out a new topbox so the system 5 fits - you buy that one, later get a system 6 and guess what???? :spitfire - money making skeem if you ask me.

anyhow i feel better now, thanks!

More Smoke & Mirrors.....

BMW are actually telling the truth here......

They use three different shell sizes to accommodate the nine different helmet sizes......the smaller six sizes fit the (expanded) topcase but the larger three don't.........

Having said that my 60/61 System 5 fits at a push.....but I guess we shouldn't have to sit on the topcase to get it to close.............?

Cheers

I also have a 60/61 but not even my wife's 52 fit in it, how much smaller do the helmets get - kiddies, how many 12 year olds out there riding gs's? :eek

Bloody Small Aren't They

My last bike had a Givi Top Box which took two belmets with ease so it was a bit of a shock to find how small the GS top box is. My System 5 seems to go in sometimes and not others - with enough room left for a sandwich, but my wife's System 4 goes in OK.

Our solution is wife's lid in Top Box and mine in the right side pannier. The left pannier is pretty useless for anything.

You were warned about it so sympathy in short supply I'm afraid! :dabone

Isn't slander only slander if it's not true?

Hve you tried putting the lid in a different way?

I used to put mine in with the base of the lid facing away from the bike (i.e. towards the handle of the topbox or crown of lid towards front of the bike). It would shut, but with a shove. However, doing it the other way around so that the base is towards the fron of the bike means the lid shuts easily.

Worth a try.

ps My first topbox broke and was replaced under warranty. :(

Perhaps that's cos you kept forcing your helmet into it :D
...forcing your helmet into things always leads to problems.

Perhaps (fnarr fnarr)

But I got a new one anyway. :D

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I should have kept my old 50l Givi. It was ugly, but did a better job.

Not wanting to start a "my helmets bigger than yours" theme but :) :-
The extrerior shell size of some lids is definately getting bigger, especially true of the Schuberth lids (i think the same manufacturer make the BMW ones). I used to be able to get two lids in my Givi top box but now I've got a Schuberth S1 I can only fit one lid in. The helmet is the same size internally but Schuberth seem to use larger shells (maybe that's one way to get them quiter). Mind you it's a smashing lid, with a good tight cosy fit and the top box is only an E36 (actually a pannier case I had for a previous bike).
