I have had my panniers topbox for a year now, use the topbox everyday. I have noticed it making a bit of noise and thought i'd check it out. Whilst there is no vertical play and it seems solid, hasn't come off like some others, there is a good inch of side to side play. The rack lugs and receiving recess in the pannier are not a close fit at all. Should there be a rubber insert or something? I can't see any way of adjusting the fit. I'm embarressed to say I have'nt noticed before but surely it wasn't like that new (All the luggage came with the bike)!!!

Any advice or similar experiences.

That is not normal the box will come off. take it back to the dealer and get a new box.
My box came off after becoming loose. The replacement box is as tight as. BMW gave me the old box back so I have it for adventure rides. but it has to be tied on.

Something badly wrong here. The recess for the box is much less than an inch bigger than the lock mechanism, and the same for the 2 back fixings. So if you have an inch of movement something somewhere is broken. Even when its not locked down, mine wont move anything like that far.

However, there is some movement. About 1/8ths at a guess. But the box is very secure so I dont worry.

The only thing that could be missing and make it a bit looser are the two rubber buffers / gromits /whatever, but even they wouldnt allow an inch or anything like it.

You sure that the whole mounting system hasnt come loose / broken?

Got no rubber buffers/grommets, should there be some, if so, they must have come off!!!

I'll mention it to the dealer.

They are stuck to the bottom of the top box. They compress a bit when the box is fitted and will reduce movement to some degree. About 1 cm dia.
