hi just put deposit down on an 56 plate 07 gs.I had an 1150 for a few years that was faultless but after reading some of the bits on here started wondering if i ve gone for the wrong model ! i know people with issues are more vocal etc.
Has anyone had negative dealings with the bmw warranty as i thought i may buy that.I want to have the bike serviced by steptoe and not a main dealer ,was nt sure if that gets threwn back at you if the insurance is needed?didnt really want to pay the extra £300 but what the general opinion on it??
cheers:beer::beerjug:

Well, had my last 1200 for 3 years and blew 1 headlight bulb. It was out of warranty & not dealer serviced when I got it, so warranty not an option.
The warranty on my present twin cam runs out in Feb & I think I may just go for it? My logic is that £300 for 5 years is not bad value.
Another reason is after a small warranty claim for the dreaded fuel strip, I was impressed at the service provided by BMW, they seemed to actually look for other faults so they could get more work. They thought the exhaust flap was partially seized & replaced it.
I was paying Bennetts £65 breakdown cover, so that will come off the warranty bill.

I was under the impression that the BMW warranty was an "invitation" thing, and that the bike needed to be under 80,000 miles & dealer serviced . . . But I may be wrong?

After reading the 1100/1150 forum on here, I've come to realise they are just as bad, if not worse than the 1200s for reliability.

Miff you are a bad, bad, boy:green gri

re arrange...... bull- rag- red- a -to :hide

If you buy the warranty it must be serviced by a BMW dealer not an independant

the bike has the bm history so the bm web site seemed to accept , it read that the service had to be carried out as per bmw suggest but not sure if it HAD to be by them?

If you take out the BMW extended warranty, then you will have to have it dealer maintained by a BMW dealer as Skywalker says.

I wouldn't bother to be honest. I've got a 56 plate GSA with 70k and never had a problem and is serviced by ABW. Contrary to what you may read on hear, the 1200 is pretty reliable and the vast majority run happily with no worries whatsoever.

My advice would be buy the bike, put the warranty money to one side (just in case anything happens) and get it serviced properly by Steptoe who will do a great job. You will be saving in the long term and have a great 1200:thumb

My logic is that £300 for 5 years is not bad value.

That would be £300 every year for five years = £1,500 plus the cost of dealer services, say another £300 (at least) every year for 5 years = another £1,500. Thats £3,000 in total.

It will be the first BMW warranty I have paid for in 5 years = £300 :thumb

You do not need to have it serviced by BMW, but if you use a privateer they must be BMW authorised like I use. I had the BMW warranty for a good few years used once over a 4 yr period, then the drive shaft went! Thankfully I still had the warranty, I shall never moan again how much I paid per yr as the bill would have been a fortune!! Its worth it for peace of mind believe me and I will still continue until they no longer cover. Good luck :)

I would think that after Neil has has his bloody great paws on it you wouldn't need a warranty if you take it there for every service..
he's forgotten more than most BMW technicians know...

This reminds me of a famous John Kockinski quote:blast

Now am I to understand BMW technicians know next to nothing, or this chap has forgotten everything required to service the bike properly...

"If you Ain't American you ain't ______" anyone else remember

Whose that then ?? If you have the "extended" warranty then that has to be done at the dealers NOT an independant or privateer.
The original manufacturer's warranty is different and an independant can be used providing its maintained as per BMW's schedule etc, but in the event of a claim its up to you to prove that its been maintained that way

Skywalker is correct and this has been duscussed at length on here in another post. I have an email from the BMW warranty Mondial people which says, without any doubt that extended warranty is a main dealer only option.
That's because it is an insurance product and they can and do dictate the terms. Read your policy :rob

Manufacturer's warranty is different and covered by the EU Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulation, such that you can go to an independent as long as certain conditions are met .
I have extended warranty on my vehicles, probably not financially sensible, but makes me feel happy :D
