Hands up if you like Altbergs.........
They're ok.....and I speak as someone who's had a pair for the past 8 years. However, they don't offer much in the way of impact protection nor protection from inversion or eversion injuries to the ankle.
Altberg gained their CE certification largely on the crush resistance of the sole, toe-box and heel counter and because of the fact that they were good at staying on riders' feet in the event of an accident.
However, my saggy, baggy old Clubman Classics offer nowhere near the level of protection of my Sidi Flexforce SRS. I'd anticipate that in an off they'd work in the same way as a ski boot and transfer and impact injury away from the vulnerable ankle joint to the top of the shin.

Are you saying that the Altberg would transfer the load like a skiboot? I would have thought that the MX style boot would be more guilty of that than something like the Altberg (which look comparatively soft - I've never seen them in person though), especially as they reach so high up the leg. I thought that was why they advertise lots of hinged knee braces in the MX mags.
Incidentally, paid a visit to the local outdoor shop to look at mountaineering boots like La Sportiva Nepal Evo - much stiffer laterally in the ankle (3.2mm thick leather) than the cruising motorcycle boots but not as much as a top race or mx boot. Nice snug fit. Not sure if it is what I am looking for but would at least be a bit different - bright yellow boots

No, sorry for any ambiguity. I'd suggest that would be the result and a desirable on at that of wearing good Moto X boots such as my Sidis.

Hein Gericke Tourag boots - plenty protection, comfort, waterproof and goretex as well.
This is a great discussion on the merits of different types of books.
The only thing I would add, is don't wiorry about waterproof-ness (if there is such a word). Get the boots that fit, and offer the level of protection you need. If they are not waterproof you can always wear waterproof socks - just make sure that you size them for that eventuality.

Another Vote For Altberg
Never fancied the bright, plastic Rossi style boots, so have used boring black ones from Daytona, then Oxtar and ended up with Altberg. Found them on eBay, so never had the pleasure of visiting their premises. Or the long wait.
Like helmets, I think you really have to try boots on. I found you can never guarantee that one maker's Size X will actually be the same as your normal Size X and be comfortable in all the right places.

Slightly off topic, but....I have a pair of Astars Vectors which I use on my DR350 for green laning (still quite new so not exactly slipper comfy yet!). Had to move the gear lever up miles so I could get my foot under to change up! I tried these on the 1150GS and again could not get them under the lever as they are so high at the toe, is there any sort of aftermarket gear peg that allows use of MX & road boots without actually changing the lever setting? Before the Vectors I was using Matterhorn army goretex boots which are great, but don't have the same level of shin or ankle protection but are very comforatable.

By that I mean no Boot would have prevented my injuries...hence my line 'comfort every time'...

I'd love to wear Altbergs- but I've had crunches with buses and taxis running into me side on and my Sidi Couriers have dented the other vehicle....I've little doubt that wearing Altbergs, I might well be walking with a limp now.
(A daft pillock in a Nova ran over my right boot at some lights today in town......I managed to vigorously fend mself off though occifer
)It's a shame Altberg don't do their traditional good looking boots with the same comfort but with some seroius protection in.....they'd absolutely corner the market given the reputation they've got !

I recently went on the BMW off road course (and fell off!) hiring a pair of off road boots these were like armour absolutly solid. Had never worn these at
all but they were comfortable, did not walk far obviously but as I'd only put them on that day this was reasonable and would like a pair but dunno what
model they were must have been BMW I assume. I have a solid pair of BMW boots which took quite a bit of breaking in but are now very good but these
are not as solid as the hired ones, so have a look for these "terminator boots" as I think these would survive a nuclear blast even if you dident. But they would be good "motor wreckers"! so get some and fight back.

I`ve got both a pair of Daytona Road star gtx & Sidi Couriers.
The Daytonas are very comfy & haven`t let any water in for the 2 years I`ve had them. Great for touring in as you can wear them with a pair of jeans & wander about your chosen destination all day in comfort They are very soft & IMO don`t offer the same confidence in a spill as my Couriers although I don`t want to try! all in all good boots IMHO
The couriers are a good looking solid boot that gives confidence that if you had a spill they would protect your feet. Quite a slim fit IMO which suits me and come further up the leg than my Daytonas although Daytona do higher leg boots ( I wish I`d got
) Getting in & out of them couldn`t be easier or quicker with 1 bit of velcro & 3 clips on the side. I don`t tend to wear these if it`s pishing down as I`ve got my others to wear so can`t vouch for waterproofness although buying a pair of waterproof socks would solve that.
I don`t think there`s a perfect boot for every one so go out try loads on & pay yer money!

sure but if we only worried about the saftey of something we'd all be driving volvos. (if taking the risk to drive at all) there are lots of good looking boots out there that are equally as safe.. its just those altbergs are minging.
why have a GS when you can have a CG125?...
