Boots - Protection vs Comfort

sure but if we only worried about the saftey of something we'd all be driving volvos. (if taking the risk to drive at all) there are lots of good looking boots out there that are equally as safe.. its just those altbergs are minging.

I think you have a distorted sense of visual aesthetics if you really think that Altbergs are "minging". They're actually quite an unassuming little boot....

My primary criterion for buying boots is how they perform. In this respect, safety is one of the subsets of that performance criterion, along with comfort, warmth, waterproofness and durability. The way that a boot looks is so low down my list of priorities as to be insignificant.

Perhaps Sir might like a pair of these.....

They have the same selection criteria as "johnnies" ..............

You need the protection, but if they make your eyes water....................

............. you're not going to reach the point where you need the protection :blast

I think Altberg should carry the slogan:

"Altberg - the boots you can wear all day, and still annexe Poland after tea"

I know this thread is a few months old, but I just joined and I'm browsing old threads with content of interest to me.

I've had Sidi Trackers (comfortable almost from the off, never crashed, but they seemed to be quite sturdy, not waterproof), Sidi Top Actions (comfy, seemingly more protection than the Tracker, not fully waterproof, but better than the Tracker) and my all-time favourites, my Alpinestars Vectors. I loved them so much. Really comfy, despite buying a size too small, no problems with the gear-shift or the brake on my FireStorm, but definitely NOT waterproof. And talk about protection . . . Never crashed, but it wouldn't take a surgeon to determine that the Vectors are very strong boots.

The design of the boot at the area where the instep starts to move up the calf just let water pretty much flood in.

I sold them on. It broke my heart.

Now that I may be getting back on a bike, and having sold all my gear when I sold my bike, I need to start from scratch. I still have my old and very battered Top Actions, my old Arai Giga 2, and a Frank Thomas leather jacket.

FWIW, I'd like an Arai X-Tour. I had my eye on H-G's Voyager GTX jacket, but that seems to have been removed from their site in the last week, so I'll keep looking. The Cruise GTX looks great, but £280 is more than I want to spend on a jacket.

I'll be going for some type of motocross boot - personally I prefer to feel that the boot will stand a chance of protecting my foot/ankle/lower leg in a spill, and no road-style boot that I've ever tried has felt like that.

I've worn good hiking & mountaineering boots on bikes, and while they've always been waterproof, they offer very little protection. I'm not liking the look of the Altberg boots as they seem to me to be glorified hiking boots. I'm sure they're not - people don't recommend stuff for no reason - but they're not for me.

I'd really like a good motocross boot that's also waterproof - does one exist? For price & features, I'm initially drawn to the Tech 3.
