My 1999 93,500 mile R1150GS has puked oil all over the inside of the rear wheel.

I'm assuming this has come from the final drive box and will be pulling the wheel off for a look-see later on today.

I hope this doesn't get too expensive :-(
 
You need to check where the oil is coming from first obviously.

Has the oil level gone down on the bevel box. Undo the fill plug and have a gander at this first.

If its the input seal I`ve made a collar removal tool you can borrow :thumb2

Well there's an interesting thing.

I took the rear wheel off the bike. There's a lot of oil spray all around the area, as one might expect.

The seal looks to be in good order (except where I've prised it off):

The trail of dribbled oil visible on the 3rd shot was there when I took the wheel off. There was some oil in the bevel box, perhaps even a reasonable amount (IIRC there's not a lot in there anyhow). Where could it be coming from?

Or is the crown wheel bearing Steptoe refers to a different bearing and I'm looking in the wrong place?
 
Put your wheel back on and check for play.

You didn't gouge the ally diff housing when you dug that seal out did you :eek: should have used a sharp screwdriver through the front of it :thumb2

Yes that's the one.

Make sure you fit the new one correctly, if you don't and it ends up not seated correctly, you will end up with side load on the bearing and will only last a couple of thousand miles.

Did you not open the filler bolt on the top of the bevel box to look at the level before you levered the seal out??:blast

You're right, there is only a smallish amount in there ...can't remember off the top of my head but I think it's only about a 3rd of a litre (you don't need to know, you just pout it in until its flush with the filler hole when you refill it afterwards)

The oil looks fairly clean in there, and it's hard to tell but I can't see any rivets missing in the ball race cage....check that thoroughly though, and give it a wiggle around to make sure there's no radial movement in the balls relative to each other (ooer missis)

Give it a spin by hand too......there shouldn't be any graunchiness or noise and it should spin nice and freely......I remember doing one with NEil a few years ago and althought he bearing that was in was newish, it span quite tightly in comparison with the new new one, which took a good 5 seconds to stop spinning with a flick of the wrist.

When was it last changed?

If on doubt, stick a new one in anyway :thumb2
PS and don't lever the seal out like that.....poke a scredriver through it and lever it out from the front face rather than the side edge :thumb

While you're there, change the big o ring (8 inch-ish wide rubber band) 'cos for the price of it, it';s not worth pissing about with

Its supposed to be new, and looks new ... but there is a little side-to-side movement on it.
I realise its dry, and bearings must have clearances, and its BIG ... but it just feels a bit looser than I'd imagine it should.
Is it meant to be like this ?

Good question. I recently changed the bearings of my gearbox
and the new ones had some side-to-side movement as well.

I suppose they should be like that.
 
I just scored a replacement bearing and seal off ebay (to keep as spares - no problems with mine - yet...). I had a good play with the bearing (as you do) no detectable side to side play (or indeed, any play) at all.
 
And so #1 the parts have arrived (3.30 pm - thanks Parcel Force).

And so #2 I'm outside my knowledge range again.

How do I get the large bearing out so that I can replace it?

And how do I get the pivot bearings out as well - there was play reported in them before and so I am determined that they shall be replaced. I've heated the pivot bolts and removed them and the bearings are indeed in poor condition. If I use a bearing puller (will have to buy one), is it a special one for that bearing? Are they adjustable? Does one size fit all? Or is there something else I should do that doesn't involve taking it to a specialist as I'm currently 'on the bench' and can't afford to take it somewhere.

Advice much appreciated.

steptoe has a good photo guide on here somewhere, but as someone who has just replaced the crown bearing; I used a heat gun to heat the bearing up. I then used two tyre levers to lever the bearing off. To put the new one on, I put the assembly in the freezer for an hour and used the heat gun on the new bearing. They slipped together like a slippery thing and seated with an audible and satisfying clunk.
