Hi all,
I am thinking of fabricating an aluminium box to fit and lock into the pillion seat mechanism of my R1150GS, has anyone done or seen one to give me some ideas.
It would have to accommodate the OEM top box and panniers.
I like the idea of a box instead of a bag so as to be lockable, I would also attach a back rest to it.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Pablo

Try these

If you are into DIY, eBay has corners, angle beads, latches, hinges, etc to make your own.

At this price you could strip these down and use your own panels

Edit - This got me thinking. The eBay prices for aluminium angles (extrusion and folded) look very high to me. It's worth ringing a metal stockholders. Folded 2mm sheet should be fine for the corner edges.

Thanks for those Dave.
I already came across those, not very water tight, made of plywood.

Will make one out of aluminium and post a pic.
I do have some angle and flat at home and I'll find out how much for a sheet of 2mm
I'll report back.

Marine grade ply works if its sealed but by the time you've painted and faffed it's probably better to use alloy sheet or a hard laminate.
Alloy can be got in a crinkle format sometimes even painted. It's stronger weight for weight and marks don't shows as easily as smooth surface.

I fitted a Pelicase 1500 to the base of secondhand seat on my 1150GS. It's waterproof lockable and very strong. Being fitted to a seat base it locks onto the bike and is quickly removable. The rear carrier and grab rail are still in place and useable. I think the slightly larger 1550 case may also work. Don't buy anthing too tall is it is difficult to swing your leg over.

That pretty much covers everything I was going to say. I got a Hein Gericke topbox and did the same thing with an old rear seat base. Works a treat but getting your leg over can be tricky (phnar, phnar...). I step up on a peg and then swing the leg.

Well chaps just finished fabricating and took it out for a test run and seems ok.
The wife and daughter had a good laugh at me seeing the back rest, all I need they say now are training wheels for stability.

I am also looking for R1150GS tank bag in reasonable good condition, if anyone has one that is no longer using I would be happy to purchase.

With that on, how do you get on & off?

Same as with a bag on the back: bike on sidestand, stand on the peg and swing over or ditto, left foot on the ground and slide yer right leg on first. If we wanted to avoid looking silly, we'd never ride a bike in the first place!

Nice solution by the way.

Why ?

Doesn't that put undue weight on the side stand with a 100kg bod resting his full weight on it?

Can't be good for the side stand ?

Plus pushing all that weight up to centre isn't good for your hips

Sorry, that looks shite.... And can't see why you need it with a top box...

Well said scotboxer thanks.

20 years ago I would have not done it but I am 50 now and stopped caring what others think and do what works for me and not bother about others, each to their own.

100kg!! I can see now why you have trouble mounting your bike, are you too short for your weight, oh hang on its the other way around isn't?
