On the road, for now:-)
Hi there,

I am looking into fitting braided lines on my 98 1100 and wondered if there are any issues or problems that I might want to know about. The kits I have found supply three lines for the front, looking at it I suppose it would be one from the lever to the abs valve, or whatever that bit is, then the other two two each caliper.......am I right??
Also has anyone tried the road attacks by continental?? just wondering what they hold the road like..........all best regards.........dunnie.:tarka:ymca2
Merry christmas to all GSERS out there:type

no problems to fit, front kit on mine (1100rt)which is goodridge, is one to the abs pump pipework, one from the abs pipework return to the splitter over the front mudguard, then one to each caliper, add in the rear one and it makes 5, road attacks are carp on the front, but ok on the rear(my r1150gs) IMHO, all in all it took about an hour to remove, replace and bleed up the new hoses, I did the abs pump first, then each caliper :thumb2

NO!!! you want 4 lines for the front... on an ABS bike.. and 1 for the rear !!!!!

If you're going for goodridge.. be sure to specify stainless fittings.. these aren't standard. you have to ask for them.. unlike HEL who only use stainless.. or rather they're standard.. you have to specify zinc plate... or whatever.

the price difference between HEL and Goodridge with stainless is pennies.

Road Attacks are a good choice... was the other tyre I considered when I dumped the Tourances.. however the chap I get my tyres from didn't have them in stock in the GS front wheel size.. so I went for BT020s (now 021s)

I think you'll be rather pleased by the way the bikes handling changes with pure road tyres. :thumb2

Having just fitted Goodridge hoses to my 1100GS, I can confirm it's 4 lines on the front, plus one line on the rear - on an ABS equiped bike.

I ordered black covered lines, to blend in, zinc plated. I have yet to see OEM ones in stainless, and don't really consider they're any advantage, especially as they cost more. I guess if you use your bike every day - wet and salted roads, you could argue they were worth the extra - I don't.

I had to wait, and after several messages to the dealer ( Brakes4u ), who it seems order from a trade supplier, who then order from Goodridge - transpired that Goodridge were out of one end connector, and were awaiting supply.
To further p*ss me off, Goodridge then sent the completed lines to the supplier, who then sent them to me!!

Brakes4u informed me that, had I ordered clear-coloured lines with stainless fittings, they were a stock item!! So it seems that any colour except clear have to be ordered.

yep... my bike lives outside. and is ridden all year round. so.. paying a little more for stainless made perfect sense. My bike is not a fair weather 'toy'

Had Steptoe still been supplying brake lines I would have bought from him.. and then I wouldn't have had any choice. the lines would be HEL and so come with stainless fittings.

as time goes by I'm slowly replacing various 'corrosion prone' bits with stainless, as a way of reducing the chance of future problems. makes sense to me.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies............

so i will now search for the best price for the front kit {4lines}........then I will sort out the rear............so when i change the front i have to bleed the abs pump do i............then the calipers when the lever feels fairly normal if you know what i mean..........i will look at the haynes manual obviously but so many people on here make things make more sense than the boring manual.
I will look forward to trying the road attacks when I have some spare cash.

Merry Christmas to you all...........also thinking about planning some sort of Beemer bike trip to the D day sights at some point........if anyones interested.:adv::tarka:chickendance:camping

4 or 5 years ago I replaced all my hoses with braided ones from HEL. The bike was a R1100 RS. Hell used my original hoses as templates to make the braided ones. They were most helpful, friendly and even charged me half price saying that they would make money out of me as they now had the dimensions to sell a hose kit for that particular model!!

As for fitting, I had no problems. Filled hoses as I worked from the master cylinders by bleeding them at joints, then bled the ABS unit first before the calipers. Just used a plastic pipe and a jam jar as normal at the ABS unit and calipers. The difference to the brakes, in both performance and feel was transformed. A really satisfying job.
