Braided Brake Lines

HI ALL, I HAVE AN R1100GS WTIH ABS AND WONDERED IF ANYONE HAS FITTED GOODRIDGE HOSES OR THE LIKE ? ANY COMMENTS ON PERFORMANCE, PRICE, WHERE TO BUY WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED. - WAS MIXING IT WITH SOME POWER RANGERS THE OTHER NIGHT AND ALMOST RAN OUT OF BRAKES , NEW PADS AND A BLEED ON THE WAY.

When you do buy pads and if you purchase aftermarket ones then try and get ones with the anti rattle springs fitted.

I've got EBC ones in mine now and they rattle like a snake on heat, on anything that resembles a ripple in the road.

I know that Dunlop DP615 pads come with the anti rattle spring fitted as there is a set alongside the keyboard as I write this. The DP615 are the front pads for a variety of BMW bikes but also include the 1100GS

Braided brake lines

Hi BARRY,

I've hust fitted braided lines to my 1100GS with ABS (99').

It's worth doing. The lines increase braking sensitivity and overall braking power, I like it anyway.

I did some checking before I bought as the only name I knew regarding hoses was goodridge. There are quit a few makes but I ended up getting 'Hel' lines. They are primarily made for aircraft, so I thought they'd be good enough for my GS. A lot of racer's use them to. the braided hoses will last 2-3 times longer than Goodrige and them come supplied coated in clear plastic, which makes them much more resistant to corrosion and wear. The ends (connectors) are stainless steel. I was advised not to get ones with alu ends etc because of possible fracture issues. Stainless ends look better and will last longer.

The GS will need 5 lines in total if your doing both front and back brakes.

I bought mine from 'Peak Performance' in Exeter, nice guys who know what they're talking about. A complete set should be about £80-90. Well worth it.

Just a thought, if you have handle bar raisers then you need to tell them and they will make the hose from the master cylinder a little longer to accomodate. If you have the 25mm raisers then the cylinder hose needs to be 30mm longer than standard and allow 45mm for the 35mm raisers

). I told them he was a friend and was told £90. Dont know why, but I'm not going to knock a good thing.

Hel braided brake lines

Simon T thanks for recommending and sending the brake lines to me, even at the vastly inflated Devonian price of £150 with a free punnet of clotted cream.
Not wanting to/incapable of fitting them myself, I contacted my local main agent who declined such a lucrative task - "sorry mate only fit parts we've supplied ourselves". No worries I'll let my fingers do the walking through page to page of plastic rocket tweekers.
Oh s..t might as well at least phone one of them and provide some mirth to their latex lives, better still I'll ring the one who's most likely to give me value for the humiliation, so Dave Wood Racing in Aylesbury meet Chris.
Well children none of it, his wife answered and although they are agents for Hel, but the parts were bought elsewhere and the bike is a BMW, no problem, happy to, delighted to, etc. - "ah well he must be some speed psycho with a degree in Meccano equipped with a Snap-on chainsaw" I hear you say.
Wrong folks, wrong, rode there this morning, through pissing rain and amazing multi tasking drivers (sorry Simon T - those with the ability to use a mobile phone, switch radio channels, chastise a screaming child, argue with spouse, abuse the car in front and increase their speed as the conditions worsen) to arrive at a spotless workshop/showroom and be offered tea and chocolate biscuits. They must be softening me up, wait 'til the bike's in bits then the tut tuts will start.
Wrong again Dave Wood worked on the bike himself, and as a superbike racer of many years and successes, he certainly knows his stuff. Over and beyond the brake lines he sorted out a few other niggles, including making and fitting a set of brackets for a twin horn set complete with new wiring.
"He must have stung you with the bill then!" - No.
"Had all his mates 'round for a laugh" No.
Plenty of tea, and sandwiches at lunchtime, but no tuts or sympathy.
Just a nice fellow who runs a proper little business providing exceptionally high standards for fair value.
Dave Wood Racing 01296 336750, and no I'm not getting any "deals" but he will be fitting and setting up WP suspension for me next week.
And the braking now feels more responsive with less effort required, not harsh but confident and controlled.

Been meaning to get braided hoses for some time. What's the price if you don't want the "free" clotted cream.

PS . . . Simon T., can I ask a dumb question? Apart from comfort when standing up, why would you fit handlebar raisers. I'm asking because after a while I get a slight ache across my back around/under the line of the shoulder blades. It's a muscular pain. I've wondered if it's to do with the handlebar position, but when I've experimented it seems intuitively that I need the bars lower, not higher.

PPS . . . Thanks for the advice about the Laser can, Simon. I made sure of the details before going ahead with the deal. Wollaston BMW actually said that they would never have anything to do with the Laser system on the 1100 and assured me that this was all new, especially the chip.

1150 with ABS £150 for 5 hoses, and they are slightly longer than standard as I have the Touratech risers fitted. You've missed the clotted cream offer as it was for orders received in July only. I understand that for August they may include a Pyramid Carbon Fibre Hugger with a half eaten packet of Thorntons plain chocolate peanuts.

The Hel braided lines for a 1150 are around £150, which includes the lines (including plastic sheaths), all ends (stainless steel) and the T-joint for the front brake lines. The price is for the whole system, front, back and the lines running into the ABS system. If you haven't got ABS the price may be lower. Don't quote me on that.

I'm not sure if 'Peak performance' do mail order? If you fancy a set let me know and I can pick them up and post them on to you.


Regarding your question about raisers; I've got 35mm raisers on my 1100 for two reasons. I'm 6'4" so when standing on the pegs with normal height bars, my back is fairly arched. The risers just put me in a more comftable postion when stood up.

However, the main reason for me buying them, was that after a couple of hours riding, I was suffering from exactly the ache you describe, under the shoulder blades. I put this down to problimatic shoulders, following several dislocations, playing rugby. I found that by raising the hand position, this placed more emphisis on my shoulders and took the strain of my upper back.

I had several trips which were above 600 miles in a day and at the end havn't found my upper back in knots.

Glad to hear things are looking promising with your lazer kit. It sounds like they have got there earlier problems sorted.
