Just want to know if, by fitting braided brakes lines to my 1100 with ABS, will this affect the ABS in any way? I have heard it may defeat the whole point of having ABS.

Whoever told you THAT is spouting complete and utter nonsense. There is a general warning for all 1100 owners to change at least one part of the brake lines which 'may' fail. Many (including me) have done this. In my case I replaced the full system. Absolutely no-one has reported a problem with the ABS as a result of this change. It's recommended that you use stainless fittings. this is optional with Goodridge and standard with HEL. the proce difference between the two is pennies.

Did the whole set in the winter .Even i had no problems . Just bled them well . and all connections are air tight .

Strongly thinking of putting S/S brake lines on my bike (02 1150 ABS).
I have just brought it around to a guy who can supply all the lines and fittings but like me , he was a bit put off by both the lines going into the ABS unit causing problems and also as to wheter or not to bypass and remove the metal brake line bridge over the front mudguard.

Can someone advise (or post pics) as to what set up/any changes they did when fitting S/S lines i.e. bypassing bridge, 2 lines to r/h side or whatever???????

Are there any problems with ABS unit once lines are changed???

cheers

Rob

BOHSFC (Rob),

Where did you go to in Dublin to get the brake line information etc? I am thinking of ditching my servo/abs later on this year and fitting braided stainless steel lines and I wouldn't mind going to a supplier to discuss the options. One suggested route is to put a double banjo on the front brake and then run one line to each side - racing set up. Certainly on a recent trawl round some bike shops this is the way it is done on sports bikes. On others, it tends to be either a line down to one side and then another line taken off a double banjo over the mudguard or a line to a central splitter then lines down to each caliper.

I am pretty sure you can get new SS braided lines for the existing ABS/Servo set up - do a search on here, there is some useful information from Steptoe in particular who has his own designation with HEL (Harrison spec, I believe) and it doesn't involve touching the solid lines going to the servo/abs unit.

Good luck,

Psyko.

It wasn't a dealer that I went to, its a direct importer of motorcycle parts who supplys dealers. I was put in touch with them through a mechanic friend of mine who deals with them so can't give out a name unfortunately as very sticky about dealing with public direct as dealers would get the hump if they knew.
As regards speaking to them they would not be very well up on the mechanical ins and outs and there advice would be to speak to main dealers or full time bike mechanics.

In relation to the race set up which you are talking about, is that all thats involved in bypassing the ABS, just to go direct to the calipers from the lever/master cylinder??

The flexable lines don't attach to the ABS unit, and all the kits i've ever seen use the metal link pipe, the kits replace all the flexable hoses currently on the bike

To bypass the ABS you only need the U piece at the frame join, it's avaliable from BMW.

Reading your posts your over complicating a very simple job. And the guy who's supplying the lines and fittings doesn't fill me with confidence.

I hope you haven't got servo brakes, or i'll be booking a holiday before all the questions and tears :D

Thanks Neil. No Servo, you will be glad to hear.:D

Thanks for information re dealer - and understood. Unfortunately, I have the servo.

If I could trouble Steptoe with a final query (before he runs screaming in the opposite direction) is there any particular reason to keep the BMW splitter unit at the side of the headstock if eliminating the servo/ABS? It seemed to me that just putting hoses straight to the calipers might be as easy and avoids having to buy another part?

Also, while I'm at it, if the ABS is eliminated and the ABS rotor disc (sorry if this is the wrong technical term) is removed from the front/rear wheel - does a shim of some sort have to be put in to compensate for the disc positioning or is it immaterial?

Steptoe, if only you lived in Ireland :aidan  I'd have the bike round to you in no time for a professional opinion!

Cheers,

Psyko

route em how you want, 2 hoses or over the guard, dnt matter, iv made over 10 sets now for bm,s variouse models and desighns, all work fine....
uggs is stripped of abs and routed directly, all seems fine, he moans bout the rear brake, but i think its just him, seems as good as mine and all the others iv tried, he moaned before the abs was taken off too tho

Bleeeding Brakes

Having changed hoses for new shiney ones i cant get my brakes to bleed up, sounds like air trapped in abs unit tried always, so would be interested to find out if any other GSers have had trouble or is it my tecnique?

Do you make and sell these Diggere?
If so what are they ( hel or goodridge, and with banjo's etc?)
If not does anyone on here supply this service?

Take care if your bike is a 2002 ABS model like mine. If it is, it will have the Evo braking system and 'BMW' stamped on the calipers, but no servo. The hoses I got from Goodridge via a local independent mechanic did not fit. Goodridge even claimed my model did not exist and must have been modified (I bought it new and the brakes were still standard!) Eventually some of the hoses had to be made to pattern off the original.

On the other hand, if your bike is a late 02 it could be an 03 model with the servo brakes, then you can ignore everything above.

Got a Venhill kit made to order during the week and fitted them, taking the metal pipe out altogether, over the mudguard. All fitted fine and working perfectly.

From who and how much?

I got them from a trade supplier beside where I work. Unfortunately, he won't deal directly with the public in case any of the bike dealers find out, but paid €111 in total for lines, Banjos and washers.
