So with all the salt on the road recently (I've been sprayed a few times) I decided to clean the pads before the match following http://www.r1200gs.info/howto/brakepads.html

However, While I've cleaned pads on previously owned bikes with metal pistons and no ABS I'm now paranoid about the sentence :-

I was told by a BMW tech person that it's ok to gently push them back with your fingers, but don't push too fast or you bugger up the ABS pump.

So how likely is it to bugger up the ABS pump and how would I know? Would it mean a catastrophic loss of brakes or just a loss of ABS?

And FWIW, I don't think the front calipers, at least, need cleaning as the pistion/housing was corrosion free after a winter on the M25.

JUstclean everything well how water and soap first then you may need to rotate the pistons around to get them all clean BEFORE You push them in

If they ( the pistons) are free and good they will slide home easily

if they are reluctant to go back in then they need extracted and seals removed and refitted

It's easy, take off the lid of the front fluid reservoir on the ABS valve (CLEAN THE AREA WELL BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE PIPE OR THE CAP SPOTLESS!!!) and stretch a vinyl glove over it secure with 2 or 3 rubber bands thus creating and air seal and a vacuum :thumb:thumb:thumb
disconnect the banjp and stick 2 small balls in the hole either side of the banjo fitting and tightly tape them up stops leaking out :thumb:thumb

Do your repair and mount the calliper with new pads and seals and whatever all flush back in with the face of the calliper

Yes you can use originals but believe me this is easier! Because you have to set a fluid level too and if you get it wrong you will get a low fluid warning light and it will scare the Keek out of you!!! Trust me New is best with a calliper strip!

So you have the calls back on conect the left calliper up first and leave the bleed nipple slightly open, stick a tube on it, make sure the tube rises for the first 3 inches at least and then turn it down into a jar of brake fluid

Fit the right side doing the same things and then remove the glove thats sealing the fluid reservoir(CHECK FOR DIRT FIRST!) ,

fluid should flow slowly when the ign is off, help it by topping the fluid level right up and switching on and operating the brake for 2 secs MAX when the self check is done Keep Topping the level and DO NOT LET IT DISAPPEAR

Once the air is gone seal the nipples and then do the same with the brake 2 secs max!!!!!!!!!! and top the level EVERYtime

In fact if you want to flush the brake fluid here it is! http://bmwsporttouring.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/245110/page/0/fpart/all/vc/1

HAve fun

Fortunately they weren't 'reluctant' which is just as well because everything you wrote after that could have been in Greek for all the good it did me :o

Still, I got to work without any brake issues - no squeaks either :)
