I rode about 18 miles in heavy rain this morning on the 1200GS (06 model)...parked the bike undercover...went to set off home an hour later...

The system doesn't appear to be working at all...turn on the ignition and it runs through its checks...but in silence...and the 'brake failure' warning flashes (faster than usual)...start the engine and move off...it continues to flash and there is only residual braking...any ideas as to the cause :nenau

Yes I know what the cause is.....

You bought an over complicated bike.

should have gone for normal brakes and let tallent decide how hard and when they should be aplied.. no a fekin computer.

Just waiting for the abuse now!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could well be something simple like the rear brake switch, stuck pedel, front brake lever clash with handguard, etc. Is your brake light on all the time? If the bike thinks a brake is on, it won't go through the startup sequence and the result is residual braking.

Ditto, also, with the tendency for the back light bulb socket assembly to corrode, maybe it's on it's last legs and coupled with a good soaking there's a dodgy connection in there :nenau

Good luck!

Mate, this is a 1200 technical section and Wideload has asked a serious question.

Please post your purile and tiresome comments in the pub where you will have to do better than this pathetic effort to get a laugh:rolleyes:

my 1200 has the same problem, hope to get a look at it when Fanum brings it home from Morocco tomorrow.

Had to ride 200 miles with no assitance over Atlas mountains which was fun.

Am sure dust has got into rear brake switch, brake light is on despite disconnecting both switches.

Guess they work in a different way to older bikes but ohm meter should detect faulty contacts.

If not warranty lasts until 23rd (:thumb)

My new 1200 doesnt have this system but in many ways, the 06 is a better bike.

Certainly took some punishment over the last few weeks:clap

Cheers...the brake light was stuck on...checked the rear light fitting was o.k...had a look at the front lever assembly and rear pedal assembly cleaned and ACF50'd...everything is now working again.

Thanks Gents...again the font of knowledge on here gets someone out of the brown stuff :thumb2

New Wiring Loom

I've just had the same symptoms. Wiring loom had shorted out to the frame. Real mess. Lucky it didn't catch fire.

How easy it is to touch a nerve with the witless and humourless today.

No nerves or humourlessness in here mate (we ride 1200's after all :augie ) - but note what the good Sergeant says and take your 'witty' banter to the 'Beakchat' section please. Any further non-technical 'wit' will be mercilessly modded

I thangyoo :thumb2

I had my brakes fail on me, had rode about 500 metres when i went to brake for a junction. Brake failure light came on like a big red beacon as i touched the lever, instant lock up, let go of the brakes and tried again locked up again (junction getting closer). Had to decide either chance the junction or bin it, binned it. Not much damage to the bike, but in 6 weeks when I can walk properly again (3 months totally), will be into bmw to get the checked properally. On the plus side as i can`t ride got the plastics off to change colour, why did i buy a boring blue one:confused:

Glad you got it sorted :thumb
