Someone pointed out that my brake light was sticking on when I got to the BMF today. Any idea what to check for? Brakes definitely weren't engaged

Well, have you looked to see if it is or isn't?
If it isn't.... phew, the bod who followed you mistook your rear light for your brake light.
If it is....
Handguard fouling front brake leaver? The guard can swivel round, catching the lever, sufficient to trip the switch into action.
Front brake switch faulty?
Rear brake light switch out of adjustment or faulty?.... or has a very small stone has wedged itself into the switch mechanism (it happens) meaning the brake lever is slightly depressed, triggering the light into action?
You are dragging your brakes, somehow?
There is a short?
Start with the simplest first.... Is the bod correct? Then work down the list.

Don't forget.... see if the bod was right, first.
Don't forget that the handguard may have slipped up again.... and it might slip down in the future. Make sure it is (reasonably) clear and (reasonably) tight.
You should be able to 'flick' the lever forward on both the clutch and the front brake lever, without any effort.
If not resolved already, had a similar situation in Austria.
Check rear brake light switch,take cover off,give it a clean.
Airline or a squirt of WD40.
If this does not work, swear at it until the air turns blue, cut a branch from a nearby tree and give the bike a dammed good beating see Fawlty Towers - John Cleese

Ok, checked all that except for the switches ( I had no idea how to) and brake light stuck on the whole time. I then took off the brake light cover and pulled the bulb out to take a look a it. We I put it back problem miraculously resolved. Strange one, guess I'll have to keep an eye on it.

The rear light fittings can corrode. It's a good place to look for a short 
Does the brake light go off now, properly each time?
You should be able to hear the front brake switch click slightly. There is a thread on how to adjust it and its clutch switch sibling, too. But it seems you may well have found the cause of the problem anyway.

Yep, brake light goes on and off as expected now. As I said may just be a temporary fix so will keep an eye on it. May look into fitting an led rear light cluster instead.
