Brake Light Stuck On...

The brake light on my Adv has stuck on (as are the WideTails, which are wired into the circuit). I’ve checked the Workshop Manual, to find they don’t mention either brake light switch – Anybody got any ideas of how to check which switch is stuck – or what to do when I work out which it is??

On the 1100 it was just above the brake pedal - and prone to catch all the crap of the day

Try giving it a good clean and lubricate all the moving bits including the return spring.

My 1150r with linked/integral brakes used to light the brakelight as a result of the calliper/pads being cloged with dust/gunge. Separately I had a rear brake self apply (unknown to me for a short distance while I was riding in a head wind) which destroyed the rear brake calliper, seals, disk and pads and cost me 500euro to remedy. I was told this was due to a partial activation of the front brake lever caused by the lever fouling against the handguards. I still have my doubts, but got stung in having it fixed. B*w did however contribute a calliper as a goodwill gesture.

Cutting to the chase, check for brake dust and other muck on the switches and the pads and failing that, don't discount the fact that an electronic gremlin might be at work. Sorry if this is not what you want to hear, however, it might save you a packet if its along the same lines as what I encountered.

Stuck is it?

Squeeze the front brake lever, you should be able to hear the micro switch clicking lightly....do this in a quiet place.

The rear brake switch is easy, its down there by the brake master cylinder find the connector for the wiring and disconnect. If the brake lights still on than its the micro switch for the front thats 'stuck'. The rest is obvious.

Haven't been playing with the rear brake pedal adjuster have we?
Could be you've over done it...just a thought.

Had the same thing recently. It was the front brake lever not moving all the way back after releasing it.

I sprayed a liberal amount of WD40 around the lever pivot and spent a few minutes pulling and releasing the lever to get the oil to work in voila....its been fine since.

Cured it! Thanks for all the replies. I went over a pretty rough track the other day, and collected a few thumps underneath. One of these had dislodged the ‘leaf spring’ switch actuator on the rear brake light switch, so that it was permanently ‘on’ – I’ve just re-positioned it & all’s well

I suspect quite a few 1200 owners may soon have similar problems as the rear brake light switch looks very prone to abuse from road dirt. Not the best design IMHO.
