Brake Pad review R1100

I brought my R1100RT in Northern Ireland last June (2010) and rode it back with a recipt from an independent sevicing dealer that had serviced the bike for the seller just prior to sale, this recipt showed new pads fitted all round.

I could see from their gold finish they weren't original BMW, probably EBC gold I thought,
On getting back home (and as I was planning a 2000 mile Euro jaunt) I stripped the bike anyway and redid the oils, filters, valve clearances plugs etc, all were either overtightend, to loose, pattern filters from Thailand and other problems, so I was glad I re-serviced it.

As the pads were new I left them as the bike seemed to stop ok.

Anyway, The bikes now done 3500 miles since the new pads and I was amazed on checking that they are down to the metal :shock: (see Pic)
Note, This is after just 3500 miles !

I do not ride on the brakes, I use anticipation, engine braking, and downchanging to slow down and am very light on the brakes (My R1200RT front pads were 1/2 worn and original at 21000 miles)
Anyway that concludes my review of Armstrong Shite Brake Pads (Google name for more "opinions" )
My new genuine BMW pads all round are on order

I use the ferodo platinums and find them value for the money "Except" on Servo ABS rears where I use HH ebc

Another reason for doing servicing yourself. Hasn't the motor industry learnt how damaging poor service can be.
When you consider how little is done for a standard service and how much they charge its criminal how many of these businesses actually stay in business.

I have seen a few sharp practices over the years and actually caught three dealers attempting to justify replacing perfectly sensible items.

And the worst thing about owning a new vehicle is that you have to go back to the main dealer to get jobs done. 100,000 warranty. Best sales/con job yet.

BMW OEM Pads for me everytime..........................I wouldn't use anything less and have in the past, thrown away EBC pads on a recent purchase although they've only just been fitted before purchase

I do all my own servicing as well, and use only original pads and other service items, I planned to replace the pads soon anyway, but am amazed how little life they had, I thought maybe they were fake as another poster had found (on other forum) they have "Armstrong" on the back & a google search for Armstrong brake pads brings up similar tales.

Interesting I wouldnt use Brembo pads at all having had them fall apart when used on other bikes, I only use EBC green pads, cant imagine why anyone would want brembo pads ? some people are damn odd.

however feel free to send me the EBC ones as thats all I ever put in the bike

presumably the OEM pads are made by brembo, since they make the calipers

I think the OEM pads are Textar. Try Motobins.

Yep that's correct, mine arrived this morning, seems Textar are supplying BMW

The fronts were Textar in a hologram security sealed box, the rear pads were just marked "Original BMW".

Just before a big trip last year I checked the original pads which looked ok but just to be on the safe side I decided to replace them. As the BM pads were a bit dearer I went for the super duper EBC gold / HH / Sintered wotsits. Big mistake, the stopping power of these pads has even made me consider replacement calipers until I realised that before the pad change actually the brakes weren`t that bad.

I tried EBC pads 30 years ago on a Suzuki GS 1000 and they were shite then and there still shite now. Never Again!
