Hi

I have a 2015 GS1200 Adventure, i recently bled the brakes and once finished both ABS lights have now come on, after riding the bike the front brake is now also sticking quit badly (cant ride it).

I have taken it to a local garage who have informed me that it will cost £2500 to fix as i have likley damaged the ABS system and also the ECU - they said they havent looked at it properly but that is their estimate.

Surely bleeding the brakes cant cause this much damage or have i messed it up

Help

thanks, pretty much what i did apart from flushing the ABS unit which doesnt seem to need to be done. anyone know anywhere in south wales which would be good to take it too?

If it’s of any use , I had a brake issue ( excessive rear brake travel ) shortly after my dealer bled the brakes . When I asked them if they bled the abs by activating it , they surprised me by answering “ not usually “
So I doubt very much if you’ve done anything to upset the abs unless you’ve let a ton of air in by letting the reservoir run dry.
(GS911 will activate the abs to ‘tickle it ‘ to get rid of any bubbles within, but clearly some , maybe many, don’t bother).

As far as I know the LCs don’t need the ABS pump flushed as the older bikes did, it should be just a bog standard brake bleed, also I can’t see any way you could possibly damage the ÉCU bleeding brakes :nenau

As you’ve already bled the brakes I’m assuming you are familiar with spanners so that’s not the problem

Get hold of an OBD scanner and Motoscan app or a GS911 and find out what the error codes are, they may well just be low brake fluid or something else similar that can be cleared easily

Check the pistons are free in the calipers and clean them if they need it (if you haven’t already)

Check the pads are free too, especially if you’ve changed them

Seems like the local garage aren’t sure what they are doing then. Will get it back and see what I can do.

According to the BMW factory service manual the abs does not need to be cycled when performing a brake bleed unless the abs unit was removed for service. A normal brake bleed moves fluid through the abs unit removing any old fluid and air bubbles in the process. Don't be afraid to flush a good amount of brake fluid through the system when bleeding so that you know that you have replaced all of the old fluid.

That is very interesting finding. I have BMW Service Manual. Can you please tell me at what section you've found that as it will make my life a bit easier.
Thanks

I have the BMW service DVD so I don't know if the numbering sequence is the same as the printed manual but DVD section 34-00-010 describes the procedure for flushing the entire brakes system and there is no mention of connecting to the diagnostic port and cycling the abs pump. The only procedure requiring connecting to the diagnostic port is in the section on replacing the pressure modulator (abs unit) where the final step is to connect to the BMW computer. There is probably no harm in cycling the abs during a brake bleed my point was just that it is not part of the normal BMW brake bleed procedure.

Have bled my brakes, 2015 gs, successfully without triggering abs module and no fault code showing.

Please clarify what you mean by the front brake sticking out quite badly?

The lever ? the pistons ? the pads ? -

I'm guessing you took it to a non BMW place for them to have a look at? ...

Also why were you bleeding the brakes ?
