I had a phone message from my supplying dealers and when i checked it seems that there has been a BMW recall for the brake lines under the tank area. My bike is a new model 2008 version registered back in February. I have contacted the dealer and the parts are on order and I await a date for the work.

No complaints or moaning as the bike has been 100%; and I have covered the best part of 7K on it. Apart from me returning it to have the EWS uprated to the latest spec and to have the heated grips sorted, both under warranty and both as I was due to go abroad, it has been excellent and tends to get riden the most out of all of my vehilces.

Just for peoples information in case you are affected and want to get ahead of the queue to get the work done.

watch the brake fluid

this happened to my mate the other night
picture this (mate is bit mad on his bike but a good rider)
the fault is a leak on the pipes i beleive
anyway
bombing down the road applies the brakes Fcuk all :eek::eek:
he just somehow managed to stop
so to all you lot while out riding keep watching the brake fluid resovoir cos if its looking half filled stop pull over and see where the fluid is spewing out - especially if its getting near the tyres.
anyway - stay safe - stay back a bit further from cars and keep an eye on that resovoir till its been in to BUMW
Gaz :thumb2

I'm sure I read somewhere that this recall was for ABS models only

Anyone confirm this?

Recall for brakes

Had the letter ysterday and it is booked in for Thursday next - one and a half hours they say; It is an ABS molel bought in July. (my previous model was ABS + servo and they were excellent & trouble free after the initial squealing was cured by the composite washers fitted under guarantee.)

Brake improvements

Maybe some 1200GS riders should try riding an airhead without upgraded brakes, and then see who should be worrying :D
Well, I expect most of us did that for many years. They didn't work too well in the wet and the rear disc had very little effect. The difference with modern brakes is very impressive. I have had no trouble with mine - my first oilhead was a 1995 1100R with ABS.

I also had this recall. Mines an 07 model with ABS, so it must effect both models!

should answer any questions... especially for those questioning official recalls in other threads...

Booked in but .....

Mine was due to go in last Thursday to have the work done......however Thursday dawned with mist and -2°C and train disruptions as a result, meaning more traffic. I decided to postpone my RV although the journey to the dealers is only about 35 km.! No desire to test my ABS - particularly if the brakes could be a bit dodgy;

recall

Had mine done last saturday. -4 and freezing fog  Bike was at williams in manachester for 4 hours as it was having the ews and software update at the same time. Everything still working.

All weather bike!

You make me feel somewhat ashamed - but the boss wanted to do her Christmas shopping in Lyon on that day soi I had to do as I was told - and went by car!

I got a call from my dealer two weeks ago. Bike (with ABS) booked in for the recall and 6k service for Dec 8.

Last Tuesday I had my IAM test. Passed and bought the examiner a coffee after the debrief. When we came back to the bikes I noticed fluid all over the right side of the bike. It wasn't engine oil so in light of the recall I decided to slowly ride the bike to South London Motorrad who were only three miles away.

SLM had a look at the bike and diagnosed a fractured front brake line (under the stailnless steel cover). 15 minutes after showing up I was away on a G650X loan bike. Top marks to SLM for customer service!

A week later I still don't have my bike back: the parts are back-ordered. Rubbish organisation by BMW. How can a manufacturer issue a recall and then not have parts in stock? Easy, I suppose, if you have enough crap ABS brake lines installed on your 08 bikes...

Do not rely on the VOSA data base: when I checked about three weeks ago before being contacted by the supplying dealer it did NOT show my bike as being among the ones affected.

Based on my experience I would recommend that anyone with an ABS 08 bike that is subject to this recall thinks long and hard about riding it again before the recall is completed. This is a serious quality control issue with potentially lethal consequences.

As it stands this GS is my third and last BMW.

Hmmm, spoke to my local dealer today about this - left the bike (08 GS) in this evening for first service tomorrow, they say it's not a recall but a 'technical update' and 'not serious'. WTF??

Also noticed my clutch fluid reservoir is empty. Nada. Rien. It was still 'wet' inside the reservoir, but certainly no visible level...

I imagine the delay may be because they'll be changing all the bits that have been covered in brake fluid?...

That's what I'd hope anyway.

Due to the cosmetic damage caused by brake fluid, I've heard of new bodywork and major engine components (barrels, heads etc) in this sort of case. It may be worthwhile letting them know that you wont be accepting a damaged bike - or at least get it in writing that they'll change any bits that subsequently turn out to suffer due to the problem.

Popped into Pidcocks this morning and my 08 GSA is covered by the recall - booked it in to have the work done which they say takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Just as well I live round the corner or all these recals would cost me a fortune in petrol :augie

I've got a late '07 built bike that I bought at 800 miles old; queried the recall with the selling dealer, and it turns out was needed but it had already been done before I bought it - so further confirmation that it isn't just '08 models.
