Brake recall 2008 Models!

Just walked friday into the shop of my dealer for a set of winter gloves.
When asking the dealer about the most recent campaigns of BMW, usually implemented during services, he made a printout for me based on VIN from his online system.

Three hits I can report here:

* Software update => Done
* Umruestung Bremsleitungen (Replace brake lines) => Not Done yet
* Ring Antenna replacement => Not Done yet

So the spare parts have been ordered, and once I come in for my 6k serice the changes will be made.

Strange that something as important as brake lines can "wait" until the next service :confused: Not sure that I would want to wait and would get ring antenna done at same time (mine replaced ages ago).

Post-fractured brake line update

Three months later...: just got my bike (08 GS) back from SLM after two weeks in their workshop. The following bits were replaced because of the brake fluid damage:

- new gearbox (no separate gearbox casings available from BMW so they sent a whole new gearbox)
- new engine crank case (the lower part of the engine, without the internal parts)
- new rear subframe

The rear swingarm bearings were also replaced under warranty as the old ones were shot after seven months and 8,200 miles. No surprise, considering the amount of cr*p thrown up by the rear wheel...

I reckon this repair cost BMW the retail equivalent of at least £3,000 in parts and labour. Because a £1 part failed my bike's been off the road for three weeks. I am not impressed.

I'm going to have to spend another 600 miles taking it gently breaking in the engine and gearbox. The only good bit is the new gearbox is much better than the old one (which was already a great improvement over the one on my 03 R850R).

The bike is great to ride but the built quality offered is not commensurate with the price charged. The fork yoke has paint rubbed off by the OEM alarm key fob (how did that rubbish design ever get signed off??), the instruments vibrate ("they all do that, sir") and my right boot has worn the paint off the brake light switch protector.

Brake line replacement

Mine was done at the same time as the first service a few weeks ago and no problem. However on the way home i noticed a great deal of movement on the brake lever - as if there was air in the system. I rang the dealer and spoke to a salesman; he said he thought that was normal and later on the boss rang me to say 'do not worry- it is impossible to eliminate all the air immediately and you will find that it will gradually come back to normal in 300 or 400 kms; In fact it was all OK within a 100kms; I was surprised because I thought that air in the system woulmd be difficult to eliminate without the usual bleeding procedures but there is no doubt that my system sorted itself out.

Rung Bahnstormer today they checked my July 08 supplied 1200GSA and advised no work required. I guess it comes down to when the bike was actually put together.

I live in Belgium; got the recall letter last week;

called dealer, he said: recall to replace brake lines and ring antenna...

I had this failure last year 2008 GS, 2K miles, 2 months old. The end of the steel pipe for the front brake circuit fractured where is enters the ABS unit under the fuel tank. Loss of front brake effort and brake fluid everywhere.

All sorted and no further problems, gearbox was replaced too due to fluid staining on the casing. Ebbo has posted a link above to thread started at the time. I also got a £500 credit out of BMW after writing a letter of complaint to them.

Of course the real danger is not from the brake failure but the chance of Nemezis popping up again to tell us how we deserve to die for being stupid enough to buy BMWs...:bounce1

I am picking my bike up tomorrow from Coopers...
I will be asking about it then..
I also want to know about the antenna ring, software update for the pinking and the FPC.....
I have already asked SBW Hertford to do some research for me on these subjects, then i will have info from 2 dealers...

AC1200,
Coopers told me the following...

The 06 was not affected by the brake recall...however, there was a banjo bolt recall on the handlebar area....and there was a cable routing for the ABS recall....
