Brakes applying themselves

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if fixing the shorting battery lead will have cured it tbh.....just ride carefully

Sorry . . But I can't see how shorting the EARTH cable will affect anything - its supposed to be touching the metal bits

Unless the real earth connection at the end of the cable is corroded and not making proper contact, in which case there might be some current surging as the unofficial connection makes contact.

I'd check all the wiring connections / earthing points and the rear light/brake light connections and then see how it behaves.

I once had the brakes stay on, on my '03 K1200 GT, but that was slightly different. I'd braked for a corner and then found that the front brakes wouldn't let go. I pulled in and let everything cool down (I'm not heavy on the brakes so they hadn't been overheating) and never had a problem again

I thought it had gone away, but 70 miles into my commute back to work tonight, it happened twice more. Interestingly though, upon checking it is only the front left brake which is coming on (same side as the ABS ring and sensor). Would this then rule out the servo? and point more towards the ABS wiring and sensor electrics

Based on this has anyone any other ideas as to the problem?

I'd try changing the brake pipe on the problem side, or that is only for that brake. I had a Peugot 205 that had a front wheel that always seemed warm After much faff I tried bleeding it, and it wouldn't do it like the other side. New brake pipe and no further warming

I take your point john, but the brakes are free prior to this happening, they are not dragging at all and do free off afterwards. When it happens it comes on very quickly and actually brings the bike to an abrupt halt.

The brakes could be dragging for a while, heat up the fluid and as it can't expand applies the brakes. As the front brakes have a common line from the ABS unit, why would only one brake be applied if it was an electrical fault? Unless both front brakes are being applied.
