Hello all, hope to get some advice if possible. 33k 1150, on the way to pick up mrs from work and noticed front brake lever felt odd, stiff, pulled over to check all and nothing obvious so continued carefully, after a couple miles, luckily at lights the brake lever completely was impossible to depress and the front brakes remain on constantly.

Luckily was only a few hundred yards from riders in Cardiff so was able to get there, tried to de activate ABS but no change.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help

Check your brake lines. Look for bulging along the rubber sections.
They have been known to fail internally, acting as a 1 way valve locking the brakes on.

If the bikes over 10 years old think about buying a new set of brake lines

Ill pick it up tomorrow and have a look, would a abs pump failure cause this problem?

What year is your bike ? need to know if you have servo brakes or not. ?.

Simply cracking off a caliper banjo bolt will tell you if the brakelines have collapsed internally.

Just had the same problem with the rear brake on my 2000 1150, non servo abs. When slowing for a 30 limit after a 10 minute 60mph run the bike felt thick and sluggish rolling off the throttle... I felt it straight away but had no idea of the cause until I was slow enough to smell the burning.........
I pulled over and saw the smoke emanating from the rear calliper ( a whiff not a plume... just coppaslip burning off the rear of the pads ) and waited for all to cool down. Out with the tools and off with the calliper, cable tied it to the pillion hanger and carried on to work.

I popped by Steptoe on the way home for his thoughts, and have ordered a new braided hose and calliper pin from motor works. My bike has 95K + on it and this is probably the original rubber hose, so it's allowed to give up and die...

The front lines are already braided, so just ordered new calliper pins for them and will pick up some more brake fluid when the bits come and strip and clean all + run fresh fluid through.

I felt the back brake going sticky earlier in the week and gave the calliper a quick check and put a little fresh fluid through. All seemed ok, no bulging in the wall, the fluid passes through and comes out clean, but when ridden for a longer high speed blast the brake bound on as the delaminated hose became a one way tap.

Hopefully your problem is similar to mine, if yours has rubber hose + it's a 1999 bike....

edit - spelling!

Is brake lever aftermarket one, happen to my mate aftermarket lever wouldn't depress plunger all the Way, pressure buildup and brakes will lockup.

On my 2000 R1150Gs non ABS (second owner) with 50K km the front right calliper locked up 6 months ago, it was perrished brake line so replaced them all around.

Thank you for all your comments, I did look into braided hoses some time ago after reading a thread on here about replacing. Anyway for your info bike is completely standard lever and is not catching. I'll let you know what I find.

Main line before splitting to both callipers has Collapsed causing a 1 way valve effect. Cracked the bleed nipples and able to move. Braided hoses are on the shopping list. Thanks for all the comments.
