brand new bike and valve failure

Im getting worried now,

My bike gave out some smoke when i started it after being stood for a few days on the side stand.

Its the first time it's ever done this in 7 years, I think its coz I washed it for the first time in 3 years after being out in all weathers ,under all the shit it is still in good nick.

It's not the quality or cost of repair that will piss me off, It's not being able to ride it for that time.

80k in now.

Does starting the engine from cold on the side stand also risk engine problems?

The answer should be no ........ but there are people who say that the oil drains from the right side and there could be a lack of oil on start up.

On 1150's the oil drains back and can cause a nosiy cam chain tensioner on the left pot (most should have the updated tensioner fitted by now) as the oil drains out of the tensioner body.

Yamaha thunder cats and R6's drop valves a lot more than the BMW 1200, I have seen quite a few smashed up 600 heads. R1 engines aren't exactly problem free either. It still shouldn't happen though.

Aye, I know of a BMW independent servicing guy who bought an R1 from new. The R1 had problems galore from day one.

I also recall sitting in Watling Tyres chatting to a dispatch rider, we both had the same 2002 VFR VTECs, and had done similar mileages at the time, around the 60K mark. His VFR experience was the polar opposite of mine, he'd had lots of expensive problems, I'd had none of the problems he'd had.

Just have a look at mileages of the GS sold on here and your argument dies a death. Remember, 99% of the GS riders are ex-jap bike riders and just buying a GS doesn't mean they ride any more. Just following fashion with their Tesco Trolley.

Dont disagree but the difference is that most of those bikes sold on here will probably go on to do higher mileages,where as jap bikes will end up with far more owners over a lifetime.
Im not sure wether its a fact that owners get bored more quickly with Jap bikes because my Guzzi 1989/Ducati 1993 are both only on there 3rd owner.

I cant say Ive met many GS riders that only do the 50 mile sunny sunday jaunt.
And I think you'll find that new GS owners once that get used to the odd front end and find its strenghts keep their bikes longer than 99% of Jap owners wether thats 1100/1150/1200.

Had a Laverda RGS that had a valve seize in guide on outside lane of m-way back in the early 80's... back wheel locked up solid... made it to the hard shoulder upright... Girlfriend on back of bike at the time was not impressed(with the bike that is.).
