Brand New Product... Battery/Alternator Monitor.

Oh the irony...dont believe it...

I went out on the new to me scooter, a 52 plate suzuki burger 400, pulled into the mo in laws after a jolly good blast,i only popped in for a cuppa, went to leave, dik, dik, dik, dik, wtf??
A flat battery, i guess some charging problem had appeared, i wondered why the indicator repeaters looked a bit dim-ish,i think the the bike is cdi so it carried on running.
Oh the irony, theres a monitor in the garage waiting to go on it.ffs
Couldnt find any jump leads for love, nor money.
So i had to borrow a car, go home ,get the optimate, go back, plug the bike in,charge the battery up, and collect the bike next day, busterd.
If i had known it wasnt charging ,i would have carried on and made a dash for home..

I've been noticing the monitor flashing at me of late. In the past when I've had the fog lights and headlight on, it's been no problem except at idle, now it regularly comes on even when at motorway speeds so something's not right.

New alternator belt is going on in the next few days to see if that fixes it.

Have to say the monitor has been a brilliant piece of kit and makes for great peace of mind when you have all the winter lights and heated gear running, knowing you're still happily charging the battery.

Now youve had the warning...

Which is more than i had yesterday....you had better hook up a voltmeter across the battery whilst the engines running and do a bit of detective work.
Dont forget the monitor is just a indicator of something going tits up,you cannot beat a good multimeter.
I wouldnt go down the route of a belt yet unless its slipping or worn, or due for replacement due to age.
I would see what voltage you have on full load and go from there.
Its possible you may have bad earth on the bike somewhere, causing a resistance which isnt letting the current through.
Equally it could be the connection on the rear of the alternator, on a car you would volt drop with the engine running, but with the 1150gs it's difficult because you get to alternator easily.
let me know J, cheers Paul

I put the meter on the battery and it all seemed good, trouble seems to be intermittent.

I have a spare alternator belt on the shelf and I don't think it's been changed in the last 20k miles so figured it's a fairly easy thing to change out. If it's slipping that would solve things. Will pull the tank off when I have a spare morning and get it done. Whilst it's off I'll check the alternator connectors etc and see if there's anything else obvious while I'm under there.

A suggestion..

Take some readings on full load in volts, and note it down, tank off, clean all the earth wires from the battery to the frame, and grease externally afterwards, then check the alternator feed wire, inspect, clean and corrosion proof.
Fling the tank back on quickly and see what you get before you change the belt.
Then change the belt and see how you go.
Then check the voltage after your mornings work.

Just got around to fitting mine.

I get blinky red with ignition on, then steady green with the engine running. I've waited for the green to go off but it doesn't.

Have I missed something (there doesn't seem to be reference to any condition where the green stays on all the time)?

I've not fitted mine yet, but seeing your post I opened the instructions and solid green means between 12.8 to 15v.

Would take that to mean OK

That's paranoia mode for useless bling:blast:D

Further to my last, just read Nomad's very first post, green should go off after 10 secs.
See what you mean...

ah....i know what that is..

I know what that is...
its headsetusniluspostus....
This condition appears when you make a cheeky offer on an autocom headset in the for sale section.
The unit doesnt return to normal operation untill you agree to the cheeky offer...Its remote controlled by telekinesis by me.
This does lead to some news though,it tells me 7 things..
1.You got the packet
2.you opened the packet
3.you fitted it
4.your bike is charging nicely
5.your battery standby voltage is low.ish
6. you didnt read the instructions...
7.Mike P's whole charging system is working nicely.
The led stays green when all systems are working correctly.
The units have been modified to stay green and not turn off, they were done this way, so you would know the battery monitor was working, and hadnt gone tits up.Its a peace of mind thing requested by numerous tossers.

atb Paul

ps there are 3 states of blinky red...

Thanks for that

top stuff, have a nice day.
Timolgra...you views on the product are exactly that, your views, if you wish to discuss the"useless bling" please do so elsewhere on the forum.
There are many people on here with positive views on the product.Even some of the great GS gurus have them fitted.
A lot of effort went into getting this product off the ground, and to get it right, and to have it slandered in this way is a bit of a pisser.
I encounter the charging problem daily , day in day out with my day job.Its a real issue.
You may never have had an alternator/dynamo fail, youre lucky, but plenty of people have, and to have this facilty on board your bike is a real plus, dont knock it.
Thanks Paul

read the instructions.....The product has evolved numerous times on an ongoing basis, due to different manufacturers specs, and positive feedback from tossers.
Dont just read the first posts, they are so yesterday.

I've got a very old OE battery and I thought that this was a small price to pay to deal with my "ancient battery" paranoia. :blast

Ah. See I only read the earlier description of the little blinky light's disco routine. :thumb2

(If you'd included the in-line fuse gubbins in the package and added that to the cost thereby avoiding me having to faff-about finding the parts, I'd have smiled on your cheeky discount request on the Autocom headset) :D

ah so.

Many tossers prefer to fit their own kind of fuseholder and fuses to their own bike set up, so the decision was made to leave you to source your own parts to fit in with the system on your bike, ie blade fuses, micro blade fuses, small glass fuses, large glass fuses.and some chaps had a mega fuse board set up on their bikes.
Hence a simple mail order job was required from maplins etc to source a fuse of your choice, and keep the price down.:thumb
ps you may want to whip your battery out, charge it and have it tested, i looks like its on its last legs.
edit, because i love you so much, heres a link to a deal on gs batteries

Anyways..

Theres only 2 left for sale.
And once there gone thats it,no more, unless i can find another engineering company who dont mind very small batch work.
Ive a few spares left to cover any warranty issues.(none so far)
