Break judder

Hi folks,

My front brakes are juddering an awful lot during medium to heavy breaking. The juddering is quite excessive, akin to riding over rumble strips.

Warped discs I thought. That was until I switched the ABS off and the juddering disappeared.

Is the juddering a sign of the abs activating? There's no indication light on the dash light up and I get the break failure light switching off when I ride away.

Any ideas?

It might be worth cleaning your disk faces with some brake cleaning solvent to remove any build-up of pad material on them. I suspect your ABS could be sensing a little grab from the disks and cutting in to prevent it. If it doesn't sort it at least your disks will be clean.

Also worth cleaning the fixing bobbins. Might not work but it's cheap and easy to do.

Just fixed a similar issue on a Suzuki bandit with four piston per caliper brakes. I would have swore blind that it was warped disks but a run out check with a dti showed both front disks to be true. Turned out to be at least one piston sticking in the bore: most of them showed signs of dirt/corrosion damaging the dust seals. Remedy?
Split the calipers and blew the Pistons out with compressed air, cleaned up the Pistons with Autosol and carefully scraped out the aluminium oxide from the seal recesses, fitted new seals throughout, reassembled, fresh brake fluid/bleed.
Brakes now working perfectly.

I had to do a sudden stop the other day and I'm sure the brake felt lack lustre so although the pads are wearing evenly, I think its time for a caliper strip down.
