I pick my 04 GS 12 up from Rainbow, ride it home, wait for warmer weather to actually be on a weekend. Bingo, yesterday was lovely.
Out on the bike, went up to N York Moors. Just overtaking a car when I heard/felt a splutter on the bike. I backed off, and we went on as normal. For 400 yards. Then I ran out of fuel, or so it felt.
I only filled up 10 miles back...
I rang Rainbow, who said to ring the BMW service rescue types. Chap turns up in under an hour and locates the problem. The seal on the fuel pump CanBus thing was letting water in and f***ed it.
Amazing that he was carrying a spare don't you think? I suspect a long list of replies saying "it happened to me" are about to appear.
The seal (after the recall) should be green not black. Mine WAS green and STILL failed.
How can BMW sell a bike that can't be left on a damp road without problems, as a TRAILBIKE??? Beats me.
Love the bike though, and the dealers response and subsequent help (thanks Shaun).
Not good though, as you can't just dry it out and re-fit it. It knackers the part when it gets wet. This is the UK for gods' sake!
Anyone know any tricks I need to know for this component (and any others) to last into my third ride?
Rant over. :-) Phil.

That's crap Phil, but at least it's good to have BMW Assistance...who are usually pretty good.

Step this way for abuse please.

My wife found a Scottish GS (or BM) website with a 1200 rider having the exact same problem. So I assume the BMW service chap "just happening to have that part" was no suprise.
What goes next, anyone got the script? :(

Don't get too despondent, I've had mine for 15 months with very few problems as have most owners. On forums such as this, people tend to post up their problems more than anything.

Need the date of manufacture to get the script. :D

Try  - flat battery, broken drive shaft, leaking rear drive seal... any others? Oh - broken top box, broken rear rack, broken panniers... but they are not esential. And cracked wheels (cast type), but only if you use it as a GS. Oh same with the drive shaft - only if you use it as a GS for long periods.

I await the 12GSA ... more fun to be had. :beerjug:

Hey Frank, after seeing in detail the 12 GSA, I have to say, the bike is the same apart from the suspension, tank and various larger items LOOKING more robust.

I cannot see how this will solve the Mechanics of the bike and the electrical system that was designed on a bad day in Berlin.

Not knocking the 1200 as a bike, but I think there are a number of serious questions to be answered before the bike can be used for what it is intended, just put the 1200 in the farce that was Long Way around, the bikes just wouldn't cut it, after the 1150 struggled.

Yeah, JUdge you didn't mention serious offroading that Nadeem is going to tell FATBOY about.....come on sir, tell him about highspeed offroad damage:D

Fecking Seagulls have crapped all over those number plates too. Is this what a dirt bike is?

JUST SPOTTED IT! Yes that one! Is there something you want to PM me?
I hate these moments....

You've hit the nail right square on the head.....it is the very acceptance than in 15 months you have very few problems that should worry us. On a bike of this price you should expect NO problems in 15 months. I had none on my 1100GS in about 4 years other than routine maintenance . On the other hand my SAAB car has has something wrong with it in between almost every service - now ask me if I'm buying another SAAB when I replace this car some time soon....

10 months and 6,300 miles. No problems apart from a battery change and software upgrade (no big deal).

Would of been if you were in Mongolia like some people who buy these bikes, I am not sure if BMW assist do a flying doctor's service:D
