Britain's Highest Roads

I walked(?!) the northern end some while back and it was as rough as fuck. Doable but probably not on a big bike or on your own.

Bealach na Ba' rises from sea level on both sides so does give the impression of being much higher. But it doesn't take anything away from it i don't think.

I often have a variation on this conversation when talking to customers in the showroom. It doesn't really matter if there's a xx Kg difference between bikes on the spec. sheet. It's what it feels like on the road that's important.

[RANT] I blame bloody Maggie Thatcher and her love affair with the work of bloody Milton Friedman for the modern day fascination with numbers and counting things and the daft idea that if you can't count something it doesn't exist..... [/RANT]

Good find Johnny. Being a cycling website I'd have thought that they'd have had Blackstone edge on there adjust shy of 400 metres...the top of the longest continuous uphill road in England and do part of Le Tour 2014. :clap

And here is another one of those excellent vehicles on another of those roads. The Wayfarers trail in North Wales.

One I fancy trying to see this year

Another day.........................a different bike

The weather forecast was superb and true to form the sun came out

I planned a circular route around the Dales of some 150 miles, planning to take in 6 more Highest Roads

No98 - Grinton Moor 463m

After Reeth

No51 - The Stang 515m, on the border of the Dales and Teesdale

Then onto No40 Tan Hill - the highest pub in England at 536m

After a lunch stop in Thwaite, I made my way over into Cumbria, over No48 Lamps Moss @518m, from here you can see the Howgill Fells and the edge of the Lakes

Next is one of my favourite roads - the Galloway Gate, near Garsdale which leads into Dentdale - it's a sinewy switchback of a road with the most awesome views and today it was on splendid form

No38 Galloway Gate - 537m

After Dentdale, I climbed up to Newby Head and turned back toward Hawes to do the last High road

No122 Widdale head, on the old boundary of the North and West Ridings of Yorkshire - standing at 438m

Bwlch Y Groes - one of many visitors yesterday. Had a very good days riding with 37 others from the Kawasaki Versys forum. Those Versys really shine on the nadgery back roads.

Discussed in an earlier thread I am thinking of doing the Scottish ones (say top 20-25) in a weekend then chill in a pub afterwards?
http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?366938-Running-it-in-250-miles-today

But if I do this would like to think I have an agreed "top20 -25" to work from.
So before I go off will pop up a list to be poked at, and welcome any feedback.
Like the idea of a photo at the "peak".
Although one thing that does still confuse me is actual access rights to some of these points on the map.

JB
Not UK highest roads but when in the US in 2006 I sought out and rode up Mount Evans in Colorado at 14,260ft, and then the next day and only a few miles away, Pike's Peak at 14,130ft. Mount Evans Byway was tarmacced all the way to the summit where the remains of a stone hotel which burned down remains, but at that time Pike's Peak was gravel over washboard for the top third, bloody scray on a heavy Pan with luggage. The Pan with carbs refused to tick over when at the summits.

In Europe I've ridden up Stelvio (Italy) at 9046ft (2758m), Col du Tourmalet at 6935ft (2114m) and Grossglockner at 7890ft (2405m).

In the UK Tan Hill Inn at 1732ft (528m), Kirkstone Pass at 1489ft (454m), Hardknott Pass at 1291ft (393m) and Wrynose Pass at 1281ft (390m).

In North Wales with Julie doing as many pass roads and B roads as we can cram into 2 days . Just back to BandB, no card reader so pics will have to wait till weekend. Missed most of the rain:D
Ride report to follow. You Welsh Blokes have kept quiet about how good it is:clap
