I am now thinking of moving my internet provider, as currently I use Pipex, and despite wanting to offer them new business, they seem almost impossible to contact to get a straight answer out of them.

I am about to set up a small business that will rely on the web to make contact with others, but will not need anything to sophisticated as such.:type

So anyone want to volunteer / recommend a broadband provider they have found helpful, reliable and good value for the money you pay.:thumb2

Or alternatively anyone to stay well away from :(

I note that "Which" were complimentary about O2 and Plusnet, in last year's survey of Broadband providers.
thanks

yup, 02, cant fault em, they dont choke, and always very helpfull, even cheaper if you have an 02 phone

Zen, been with them 3 years now. great service, only problem I had was when my router packed in, called Zen techies who told me to hang up and they would call me back. Less than a minute later I get a call from zen techie who talked me through diagnostics in plain English, "yep it's your router, I will get a new one sent out to you tomorrrow". Next morning new router arrived, plugged it in and all working as before.

I'd say two things.....

1) Orange business broadband are very good and haven't let me down yet

2) Don't listen to ANYONE here or their recommendations about anything other than the customer service or admin side of things.....not unless they live very locally to you.....

Line contention, local resources and differences in systems make a lot of recommendations about things like how may times someone has been disconnected, speeds received and down times largely irrelevant- the only way you'll find out the best locally is by asking locally....see what the people around you say.

Did I menyion Orange business broadband have been good for me? :blast

search your exchange at Samknows
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/SWAG shows my exchange
Looks to see if you have cable as an option as this is usually a good service, especially if you get a phone/TV/bband package.
Next, look to see what operators have LLU coverage. If you look at mine, I have options for O2/Be*(both owned by Telefonica), AOL & TalkTalk.
Then, as fanny says, check out what people living near to you say about the services. Be* & O2 have forums which you should be able to access. Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere near TalkTalk or AOL.

I've had Be* here for several months. Very good customer service.

Check out Quidco.com for any bribes. I had £40 from Be* - seems O2 are offering big incentives:

+1 for ZEN, they even manage to sort out BT's problem. Very helpful UK based tech support too.

Food for thought here, not least from Wessie for his useful link to "samknows" that has helped put a great deal in perspective for me.

Turns out, with me living on the outskirts of a small town, it would appear my options are very much limited.

I know what I would like but can't get it - aye well:comfort

Indeed..........and on the basis of no. 2 above I'd recommend O2 for the service. Top notch. They just called me and offered me 12 months for the price of 10 if I signed up for another year which I was very happy to do. :thumb2

Let me know if you've got any questions about Plusnet and I'll do what I can to answer them.

Plusnet

I had Plusnet for a few years but gave up on them. Service gradually got worse. Had to constantly reboot the router, service was always dropping. Nothing got resolved when I reported it. Now with Virgin... excellent connection, fast and just about never drops.

What a coincidence that 3 people called Mech have the same problem.

Are you on an LLU exchange for O2?

I've only heard of O2 customers on "BT only" exchanges that have been traffic shaped. This is more to do with the capacity of the BT network than O2's policy.

Hmm dont know how i managed that :augie and no as far as im aware my exchange is not LLU but went round to a mates house just down the road hes on o2 as well the other day and he has been talking to o2 direct and they told him they had been messing with the broadband and his has gone pants as well :(
