Was on my way home from work this afternoon/evening.

Bike was fine all the way up, but 5 miles into the return journey (70 each way) she started to misfire.

At the point of the misfire the Rev counter plunged to 0, then, a second later she roared into life again, Rev counter back up. This repeated itself numerous times where I then decided it would be too dangerous to try and coax her home.

Sat on the hard shoulder for an hour until finally picked up by 'roadside assistance'.

Firstly, many thanks to the man on the 1150 that stopped to see if there was anything he could do. (A customer of Steptoe, as his name came up!) It was much appreciated if only for the moral support.

Secondly, I have not touched her yet, but has anyone any pointers. She has recently had throttle-bodies and new cables but has not missed a beat for the last 3 weeks/1500 miles.

I believe the problem to be electrical as it appeared to be total electrical failure on the engine side, all other power items OK ie ABS lights, headlights etc. Failure was very intermittent, could be a broken wire/faulty connector. Also when she runs she runs fine, but then dies in an instant.

Hopefully will have time to diagnose tomorrow but any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Dazlove.

Sounds like a Hall Sensor failure, do a 'search' on here for more info:)

I had something similar on a trip to France once. Turned out to be dodgy fuel.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies chaps.

I have looked through my invoices and seen that the Hall Sensor was replaced a year ago by the dealer.

With that in mind I will investigate the broken wiring or side stand switch first.

I will update with my findings.

Thanks again

I favour the ignition switch sub loom for a broken wire!

Yeah that was me that stopped.

Pleased you eventually got home :thumb

Sorry I wasn't more help

Cheers

When i had my bike serviced by steptoe he cut all the clips from the wiring on the headstock as they are to tight with the clips on. might be some help

Hopefully Found the Problem!

Thanks for all the replies and pointers.

Had her running on the centre stand whilst pulling and pushing all the wiring I could find. Did not stop her running, and all the wiring I looked at, whilst tatty, looked in reasonable shape.

As she was running I could hear the gentle hum of the fuel pump, then the pump made a different noise, and she cut out.

Tried to restart a couple of times before she sprang into life again.

Again she ran for some time, then the pump made the same different(!) noise and she cut out again.

I thought that this could be water in the tank. Having thought back to last Monday, she didn't miss a beat all of the way to work, but I did leave her for 2 days before coming home on the Wednesday, when she broke down. During the 2 days she sat on the very edge of a covered bike park, so could have easily sat in the blowing wind and rain.

Anyway, have now put in a bottle of Dry Fuel and taken her out, where she has not missed a beat again.

Hopefully problem solved!http://www.ukgser.com/forums/images/smilies/clap.gif

Best regards

Water

If you think you have water in your fuel, I would be tempted to check the drain from the filler neck is not blocked. Have had the same issue on a few bikes.

I had EXACTLY the same problem on my ole 1150 GS in 2008. Took it to Woolaston BMW who replaced the Hall sensor. I did about 80 miles and the problem came back again. Managed to ride it back. They spent about 10 hours labour trying to find the problem(incidentally didn't charge me!) and finally sorted it out but for the life of me can't remember the fault.:blast.
If you speak to Peter in the service department and mention my problem and name(Addison-junior)he should remember or have a record of the repair.
Cheers and good luck!:thumb2

Noisy pumps can mean the pump is starting to fail or the fuel filter is blocked.
Worth also checking the 4 pin plug supplying the volts (RH side of tank).
