Broken locking mechanism on GS1150 hard luggage

FERK! Ham-fisted me again! I had my side cases off yesteday and when trying to press the handles down to lock it, I didn't have the "orange swivel jobbie thing" fully retracted. I was botching it from behind and didn't have a clear view of the mechanism. The handles are stiff anyway and, not realising that the resisitance was being caused by the orange swivel bit sticking out a fraction, I forced the handles down and bent the swivelling orange thing (all technical terms I'm afraid). Realising my mistake, I attempted to straighten it with a screw driver and...it fcukn snapped! Although the box still closes and remains shut, it can no longer be locked.

I phoned my dealer explaining the problem and learned that I would need to buy the whole unit including handles for a cost of around £100. (not fitted)...No fkn way!

Anyone got any alternative suggestions or have damaged luggage where this mechanism can be salvaged?

Motorworks have a "Pannier lockset" and a "Lock repair kit 850/1100" in their current catalogue on page 69.

Might be worth talking to them, or one of the others?

Find Another Damaged Case?

Only thing I can suggest is look around for a case thats damaged elsewhere and swop-over the locking assembly? This assembly is only pop-riveted into the main body of the case and you can buy a rivet kit for this from your local dealer, maybe worth a try?? I've done before, so if you get a case and you need a hand let me know.

Grizzly, I'll keep my eyes peeled for any damamged boxes. I'm determined not to pay BM the stupid dosh they're asking for.

Ronno, I had the same problem with mine. I bought a kit from Sherlocks which has everything you need: the red (orange) tab, the actual lock barrel, and all the pop rivets etc. (including detailed instructions !)

Have a look here , scroll down to "Panniers, Frames & Rails". It's part number 020337 and costs £23.50

I'VE DONE IT TWICE!
Repair kit obtained from Motor works costs about £26 and about 60 mins of your time.Youll need a drill to do the old rivets ,a bit of old wire coathanger to get the old barrel out and one of those cheap pop rivet guns plus some superglue.
The kit includes full instructions (in English) rivets and everything you need and you can re use the original barrel.The thing you have to worry about most is ensuring that when you drill out the old rivetts is that the waste metal doesnt go into the lock mechanism.
Cheap and easy

Ordered this from John Clark Dundee (who originally quoted me the extortionate price for replacement) and picked it up yesterday. I'm to have it fitted next week.

Part price: £25!

I meant to post an update on this but forgot until now. Dave from Stanley, Perth who does the independant bike servicing sorted this out for me and replaced the damaged lock with the part bought from John Clark for £25. It uses the original key so the box is like new again. RESULT! Apparently fitting the new lock was a bit fiddly but it's a damn sight better than buying a new case. Thanks for all the help here.

Ronno, is the orange bit really needed. The handle still locks with the handle down.
Ive always found the orange bits a nuisance.
