Has anyone ever had pillion footrest snap during use before on a GS / GSA??

Just Got home from a ride and as Jan was about to dismount she said it felt funny under her foot, reason being only a remaining stump where the foot rest should be! 2010 GSA any others had similar problem?:(:(

Cheers

Stuart

Never heard of that, being on such a relatively new bike perhaps it would be best to chat nicely to a main dealer regarding safety of your beloved and BMW's obligations to make something fit for purpose. If it has broken, it could have been a manufacturing defect and if so I would expect a goodwill repair.

Jeez not that old chesnut!! Something has broken so why in the name of Sam should it be a "fit for purpose" thing?

It would be worth just asking the dealer about it but I'm not sure how you could hold them liable. I guess it's one of those things so just replace it and move on:thumb2

Well if it hasnt hit anything or been dropped a fot peg shouldn't just fall off. Of course the OP should ask BMW what they are going to do about it.

So along with putting up with failing FDs and failing ESA we should now put up with rear pegs falling off. Welcome to the wonderful world of BMW.

BMWs propaganda machine has certainly earnt its money suckering us all in.

I usually agree with a lot of what you say however, on this one I am in the other camp.

Assuming the peg has not been damaged by the OP I think it is reasonable to expect it not to fall off a 3 year old vehicle. Just as it is not acceptable for a rear shock to fail after 9000 miles ( not me...a pal of mine...mine went at 18000 which I think is just about OK given the abuse it gets) or and FD to crumble in under 20k.

If the bike has been used within design parameters the failings are not acceptable by a "reasonable person" and on that basis should be addressed by BMW...which to be fair, they often are.

I did say chat nicely, about fit for purpose as a broken footpeg is clearly nothing like it. The dealer will probably fix it in 5 minutes whilst you wait, it's hardly an expense to them. More important is the feedback about why it broke. The term "Fit for purpose" defines quality, nothing more.

I'm normally in the anti-complaining camp, but a faulty pillion footpeg?? Must be a one-off. All it has to do is let you mount/dismount and give you somewhere to rest your feet FFS.

V4TRV, I do hope you never meet Jan, she is petite and weighs next to nothing, but what a temper!!! :hide

Spoke to dealer so will be £42 worse off on Wednesday when parts arrive, it's in a kit form apparently.

Thanks all for your replies. :beerjug:

Here is a thought - which is more likely - In three years of ownership a small accident happens to the foot peg which goes unnoticed but weakens it - or -A previoulsy unnoticed manufacturing fault suddenly leads to failure.

Both are possible but I think it premature to blame BMW.

I'm also becoming a bit pissed off with things needing replacing on mine,
Thankfully I've always had the extended warranty.
In the last 3 years under warranty
Rear shock
Final drive rebuild
Gearbox to engine oil leak
Rear wheel bearing (10,000 miles after said drive rebuild)
And only last week I had the shaft drive replaced as the UJ decided to eat itself
Things not covered by warranty
Ignition switch,
Heat guard fell off exhaust,
Mainstand badly bent and twisted,
There may be more but I think I've blocked it out.
06 plate with 43,000 miles.
I've had far less trouble with my 15 year old TL1000s with 67,000 miles on the clock which hasn't had a dealer service since about 2001 :thumb2

I wouldnt blame BMW anyway. Its clearly not a design fault but a manufacturing flaw or operator abuse. Leaving aside the latter, it seems most likely that BMW's supplier has sent in a faulty item. BMW would not inspect it - thats simply not the way that things are done these days or are economic. They would expect the component to be correct. And if its only one or two failures, then incoming quality standards could be met anyway - nothing is ever 100% fault free.

A sense of proportion is needed. That said I wouold expect BMW to supply the replace FOC
