After some debates in this forum i'm now a proud owner of the R1100GS. Drived it home from Berlin to Estonia in two days.

I better not tell how amazed i am after coming from the saddles of sportsbikes. I've only testdrived R1200GS before, and i feel this 2 generations older one is even better! Boxer GS is one helluva good machine!

Has TT41L tank, 35mm handlebar risers, engine guards, bike itself is coloured in like a chicken shit - ideal for me coz i want to travel into Asia next summer so nobody looks at me as moving money-wallet as they probably do on shining metallic blue R1150GSes and silver adventures :P.

What makes me think it's better than R12GS is that it has waaay much better siting position - probably because of risers. And the second thing is 41L tank - witch first takes air away from my knees and don't have to stop every 300kms to fill it up again.

BUT, why the hell it has so much power? Not sure, i have nobody in Estonia to compare with, it felt at least the same powerful as R12GS. Could there be injection CPU upgrade some kind of installed, how can i check it??? Normal boxer pushes good HP and torque out till 6K rmpm or so, but that one has surprisingly good enough high end too.

There some mods done from previous owner, not sure if it has any torque/horsepower upgrades too...

Oh, and ABS is blessing to. Helped me to avoid accident in a traffic-busy Poland road at the middle of the night with dense fog.

And it looks it has original exhaust, but it makes different sound than the other R11GSes i hear in Germany - mine is bit more noisy and powerful sound.

Could there be a original-exhaust mods too for R1100GS that the previous owner had done???

Hi Mo,

Welcome to the crazy world of GSing!

If you want to compare your bike with other, there will be 26 of us rolling off the Tallink Ferry into Tallinn on the morning of Sunday 5 June 2005. See here

If you can't make that, we'll be in Parnu that night. Come for a beer!

Gentlemen, you'll find the BEST gravel roads on Earth in Estonia for your bikes - just get the detailed (local "Regio" maps recommended) maps. Lot of fun guaranteed!

Today drived on them and enjoyed alot, even on the speeds 130+km/h.

And btw - had my first GS crash too just about 2 hours ago - direcly into mudhole at slow speed! It was soo slippy - just rained and fresh mud&grass terrain is more slippy than ice i guess :P Aftereffects: biig mud and grass blogs betwe enengine guards and cylinders, broken original lefft plastic-case holder detail (not sure how i can fix it) and me fully dirty-muddy. Must get into garage and clean the stuff up!

Was fun indeed :moped: :)

Yes. I also have come into the world of the GS. having read the GS forums for some time before buying as wasnt sure if it was the right thing to do or not. and being too many years off a bike thought I needed a life change... wellllll I am nearer to the pension than my 21st birthday :D ... a lot nearer...lol
So got myself a 2000 1150 7 months ago and with over 7000 miles under my wheels I feel that I am a little more used to it now and thoroughly enjoying the experiance.. now why didnt I do this sooner I ask.
My only problem was the size of the beast, but I see girls riding heavy weights, so why not me and went for it.... and havent regretted it since
looking forward to lots more fun and future ride outs with some the crowd here I hope.
also keen to do an offroad course which sounds like a lot of fun.

gotta go now.... going for a ride in the rain....ah bliss :thumb

Hey Mo-Tech
How about organizing a GS meeting in Estonia sometime next year ? Sounds like fun to me - I hear the beer is cheap up there too :beerjug:

Why not!?

Just let me know when UK people expect to arrive in Estonia. I think Estonia is made for GS riders - LOT of fun gravel roads. Lots a tarmac too, bit shaky though :moped:

:D

Welcome Mo,

nice pictures, we have a lot of Estonian's working in Norfolk now, all nice friendly people. What town are you from?
You never know, we might just both know somebody.

Noddy.

Cool! That's nice to hear!

I'm from Elva, it's near to Tartu town - our university town. I study astronomy and physics there myself and work too.

Transposition

Looks like you two need a seat swap, Red/Black is good and Kalahari/Yellow would be RARE ! Good choice as any enlightened reader will tell you the 1100 is by far the best Oilhead !

Hmmm not a bad idea, pop over to England Mo we can swap seats and see how they look.

I checked with our Estonian's today but it looks like most of them come from the Narva area of Ida-Virumaa. Seems that the poeple living near to the sea ports are making the trip but not from in-land.

Noddy.

Sounds interesting indeed.

IF i ever pop over to England - not sure about that - Asia and Africa are a lot more interesting for me. :D

Otherwise i'll look forward you guys visit Estonia on forthcoming summer.
