Has any one else experienced a dramatic increase in buffeting when carying a pillion?

Took a mate to the Oulton Park BSB meet yesteday, first time I have had a pillion on a motorway run and I have to say that above (er hum) 80 the buffeting was pretty bad.

I have a set of Tobinators fitted and anyway the buffeting was not coming from the screen it was definately from the pillion. I know because before I picked him up and after i dropped him back off my journey was back to normal.

The buffeting was not constant but there must have been times when the bike and wind were at a certain angle to each other and then it would happen. Becasue it wasn't constant when it happened my head got knocked about quite a bit. My mate mentioned it at the Service station as he wondered what was happening. I think he thought I had my MP3 player on and was listenint to a bit of Motorhead!!

Had mine removed, since which time no odd aerodynamic or handling problems have arisen.

She only buffets me when I've scared her on an overtake or got a bit too close to someone.

Maybe you should talk to your mate, he might have something very important he wants to tell you about your "friendship"...

Other than that...

My lid has got one of those little wings on the back, and sometimes when I have my girlfriend on the back our heads move sideways, a lot. So I've told her to back off a bit and let the air flow cleaner. This has pretty much happened on all bikes I've had her on the back on, from super bikes, to cruisers, to the GS... :)

Don't carry a pillion much on the Adv. My Pan used to buffet terribly with a passenger - the airflow would also tend to push my head forwards - making any journey, quite literally, a pain in the neck.

Dumped her & the problems all went away at once...

Isn't the carrier a tad uncomfy over long distances?:D

:D :D :D :D :D She's got her own bike now and my pillion seat stays in the garage...

Did you adjust the preload for the pillion's extra weight? If not, then the screen is likely to be at a different angle. What works when solo may not work two up.

I know what you mean about buffeting with a pillion on Motorways...but then I realised a lot of it was to do with the "dirty air" from following other vehicles - like 85mph Transits...it felt a bit worse than without a pillion.

Obewan - how was the traffic on your journey?

try it this way round .... may give you comfort when you stop and make it all worthwhile ?

Thanks Chaps

Only one other occassion this year where I know I will have a pillion and that is Assen. So not too much of a problem but never had buffetting like this on a Jap Sports bike (ZX9 etc).

Clerici: Not too much traffic certainly on the way to Oulton early on a Bank Holiday Monday.

So guess I have to nag my mate into getting a new bike, he sold his last year and has yet to sort a new 'un out. And persuade my older brother to pass his test so as I don't have to take him to Assen every year. Which buffeting aside always squares off the tyres. 2 up 1400 miles nearly all motorway:( The trick is to get thr tyres virtually to the point of needing replacing before the Assen trip not put new ones on before the trip.

Ive also noticed increased buffeting around my midrift,i think because the pasanger is high up the turberlance is caused by the passangers legs.

I get the odd head butt from the wife on the long straight sections as she nods off. Used to get bad buffetting from the pillion but resolved with Tobinators and careful setup of screen.

I get exactly the same thing. My jacket gets blown up if it's not zipped in which without a passenger isn't usually a problem.

seem to remember from the travels monologue , she dumped you - long distance ??

still , age catches up with all of us and memory plays strange tricks

but how would i know

On target as usual Motonit. If you'd read the travelogue a little closer, you might have noticed that I didn't do it on a Pan...
