Morning all, SWMBO and me are off to Burgundy in the summer:Motomartin. Were going to a place called Santenay, south of Dijon. We have a week to fill. Anyone have any ideas of places to visit ?. Bear in mind we dont do mega mileage days.

Beaune is a pleasant place to visit. Gets very busy with tourists. If you are interested in how wine is made & why they grow different grape varieties in different areas then sign up for a wine tour - pile into the back of a minibus & visit a few villages in the Cote de Beaune then go for a wine tasting. Informative & fun. Maybe take a day off the bike & use public transport so you can indulge in a long lunch. Patriarche Pere & Fils do an excellent cellar tour.

Roads in the Beaujolais wine area are very scenic. Tick off the cru villages as you pass through.

The Morvan National Park is a few km to the west. Autun had a long association with the Romans.

The Jura mountains and Lakes Geneva & Neuchatel are easy day trips away on fabulous roads.

Just get the 1:200000 Michelin maps for the areas and plot routes using the green lines along the roads as guides to scenic roads.

thanks for that, you mentiom lake Geneva. Is it feasable to have a day in Switzerland ?. As for a map, we are going with Keycamp, and as part of the package you get the Michelin map of the area youre going to.

If you have a Garmin GPS device, have a look at the 80 virees a moto sticky for the region. Lots of good routes as it is 'great roads, mate' territory.

Shift your carcass over to the Morvan, as suggested. Some excellent roads around there. I took a bunch of Tossers down to Dijon on one of 'Wapping's wanders' and we had a great time. http://www.parcdumorvan.org/ The routes may be in the 'Wanders' section. If not PM me your email address and I'll send them to you.

Arm yourself with the Michelin Green guide, all the things to see and do are in it.... and some more besides... along with suggested and very reasonably distanced suggested routes. It's a popular enough destination for holiday makers of all sorts of colours and creeds, so half an hour on Google or a bit of time in the library or Waterstone's will have you plotting your own holiday just as YOU want it in just a wee while.

PS When saying where they are staying it's a good idea for bods to insert a Google map link to the exact town. It saves kind hearted fellows having to look for it themselves or guess.... and France is a very big place.

Google maps looking for Santenay, turns up only one:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=San...Loir-et-Cher,+Centre,+France&t=m&z=12&vpsrc=0

It's a long way from Dijon..... 358 km to be exact..... and definitely not south!

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr...9OukHk_jRzGQHDgF18gNBA&vpsrc=6&mra=ls&t=m&z=9

I knew (or hoped) that couldn't be right, or the OP's geography was all to pot (it's not unknown).

So I then Googled, 'Santenay', which lead me too the Wikipedia page, from which I tried: 'Santenay Cote d'or' which lead me to a very nice website: http://www.ville-de-santenay.fr/santenay/en/town/history.htm which gave me the post code address of Santenay 21590.....

Which then lead me to http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=215...-d'Or,+Burgundy,+France&gl=uk&t=m&z=8&vpsrc=6

which is only 63 km from Dijon in a southerly direction, which must from the OP's description be the right place.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=215...-d'Or,+Burgundy,+France&gl=uk&t=m&z=8&vpsrc=6

Much better if the OP can do a bit of the donkey work first, when looking for constructive and free help :beerjug:

you may find you need more than one of the Michelin 1:200,000 maps - they are only £3.49 from Amazon or order online from WHSmith to collect at your local branch as this is always cheaper.

For me, a daytrip to say Neuchatel in CH on a mix of Autoroute and scenic roads is easy. You or your other half may have a different view of this 277 mile route knocked up in google maps without any reference to Michelin or other recommendations.

Wessie has it right, as he usually does.

Of course you can go to Switzerland (where exactly is a different matter) in a day... if YOU want to. It's certainly not impossible, if YOU want to do the mileage or take those roads.

Get yourself some half decent paper maps (they are not a fortune and last for several years) instead of relying on the one Michelin map (of God knows exactly what or where) you got free from a campsite company.

Failing that, use the free Google maps or viaMichelin map tools available on the web.

Whatever, a paper map or two (or three) of assorted scales and detail will do you better in the long run as chances are you'll not have your PC with you on the road ;)

Dunno why you'd want to travel far from burgundy. There's easily enough to keep you occupied for 2 weeks or more, especially if you're remotely interested in food and wine.

The market in beaune on Saturday morning is not to be missed.

Wine tasting in lots of places in the centre of Beaune - Marche du Vin next to the tourist office would be my recommendation for a starter. Caves des Cordeliers just around the corner is good too.

Try Chateau de Savigny, they have a motorcycle museum and a load of old mostly military planes in a muddy field. Defiantly worth a look.

Otherwise, take a Pootle around the vineyards, get away from the main route de vin and explore up in the back roads of the escarpment.

You're in paradise.

I realise this is an old'ish thread and the poster ^^^ mentions the motorcycle museum which is just outside Beaune in Savigny Les Beaune.

It's in an old castle with a collection of 80 fighter planes in the grounds too along with another collection of Arbarth cars and of course a vineyard. Well worth a look in
