Has anybody else smelt burning rubber(or plastic maybe) when using their heated grips in the rain ?

Cheers

Funny you should say that. I was doing a major burn-out and making a fantastic doughnut shape on the local supermarket car park the other day, and the smell of rubber was unbelievable.

Couldn't see much until the smoke cleared either.

It wasn't raining though. :D

Thanks mate. That would be really useful if you'd told me whether you had your heated grips on at the time.

Sorry Guitarman - I got carried away there. Wasn't a very serious reply was it? I don't ever smell burning rubber from the grips when they are on or off. Just couldn't resist a bit of a joke there. I'm behaving again now..

Best Regs,

Richard

Assuming you are travelling at a speed above zero, then the smell you are smelling couldn't be from the grips.

Reasoning is that they are lower than your helmet and the wind flow would mean their smell wouldn't be obvious to you.

As airborne particles are usually wetted and then carried to the ground during precipitation I would assume there would be less odour from the prevailing atmosphere during that occurence.

Are you smelling the smell when at a standstill after a ride, or when actually travelling??

Mick.

Sorry I should have said it's only noticeable at a standstill.

It went away when I switched the grips off.

I have received one email reply who said he'd had the same problem but his local dealer couldn't find anything wrong.

I'm a little worried as my first GS, a 1989 R100GS, caught fire due to a wiring loom fault. Not apparently known to BMW but known to everyone I spoke to at the time. Interestingly when I called the dealer, the workshop gave me an instant quote to replace the loom. Pretty impressive for something they never have to do !

I got a secondhand loom from MotorWorks and with a bit of help I did it myself. Cost me £100 (incliding paying my friendly mechanic) rather than over 600 at the dealer.

No offence taken Rich !

Heated grips were also a problem with my R100gs - the wires chaffed under the tank and caused the fuse supplying the tacho and the brake lights to fail, as well as the smell of burning rubber

Judging by the total failure of this thread to get many responses I guess this isn't a major problem.

Thanks to everyone who did respond though !

Cheers
